unsuccessful header install

Everything seemed to be black and white until i went to separate the a pipe from the cat converter. I was thinking about just breaking the nuts then putting a new nut on. I also used a impact gun and that just striped the nut. Has anyone had this problem? Help me out guys.

A couple people have. What I remember them doing was taking a Dremel to the NUT and not the stud and cutting off the nut. then somehow or other they got the pipes apart.

But I didnt deal with this as I got my car with headers already...

Since the header gets exposed too very harsh conditions, it would have been better if you used a lot of wd-40 on it the night before or something.

I had that problem yesterday. I broke loose two of the nuts but not the third. I unhooked the entire exhaust dragged it from under my car and put it in the back of my roomates car and drove to a muffler shop. they heated the nut up with a torch and then it came off.

I also removed the whole exhaust system and then just ground off the bolts, punched them out and used new ones to connected it back up.

Most people recommend spraying with wd40 the night before and it comes off pretty easy like the previous poster noted

PB blaster works best, that's what it's made for. worked great on numerous suspensions and my headers. WD 40 is for "Water Displacement"

I've got Liquid Wrench and WD-40 (and a can of CRC I think) in the garage right now, but PB blaster is the best that I've used (which is probably why I ran out)... I've heard Kroil is great too (but is harder to find)...

Basically:

Mapp gas (to heat stuff off) > Kano Kroil > PB Blaster > Liquid Wrench > WD-40

say the pb blaster doest not work, and i have to torch or cut the nuts off? If i torch it wont i mess up the threads? And if i cut them all i have to do is just replace the nuts i cut and i am good to go?

As long as you don't mess up, cut to far and hit the bolt. And as we all know nothing ever goes wrong. Right?

if the PB blaster doesn't work the next step would be to heat the nut up and try to loosen it. the chances of you cutting only the nut off with a torch or grinder and not messing up the threads are slim to none, dremel maybe. worse case cut the nut off and replace the bolt and nut.

edit: first make sure you are using a 6 point socket. not one of those crap multi ~24 point sockets. some PB, a 6 point socket and a breaker bar can go a long way!

I just did this 2 days ago. I had to cross cut it with a dremel and use a sharp punch to finish the job. If ur careful, u wont hit the bolt.

wd40 is a lubricant & rust inhibitor, not a rust penetrator.

PB Blaster owns wd40!

If you already rounded the nuts PB Blaster isn't going to you help you.

You have 3 ways to do this:

1. Torch them off. I'm not talking a torch that you buy from Home Depot. You need an oxy-acetylene torch and generally only shops have those.

2. Cut them off w/ a dremel, grinder, sawzall.

3. Get something like this to remove rounded nuts.

These kind of tools are the easiest way I've found to remove a badly seized nut without messing up the bolt:

They're a lot easier to use in tight spaces than just about any other method.
