Turbo Install Update...

Folks.

I will be done by this weekend and hopefully have it running by Sunday. It might run great right off the bat... or might need some tuning and additional tuning work... I don't know. The installation should be completed by Saturday and I will take pictures at that time as I really don't want to take pictures of half-completed work.

Since I have actually changed a few things since I conceptualized the project... here's what is like now:

T04E turbo:
* Chose a rather big turbo for a few reasons. One is that I never have to upgrade my system if I build the motor... this one is capable of about 850hp. Since I am initially boosting about 5.5psi... spool-up should be around 3300 RPM. A T3 would choke on a 3200cc V6 at 6K RPMs and above
Tial 46mm HP wastegate:
* This is the MOTHER of all wastegates. It is used as the upgrade wastegate on the Porsche GT2 race-cars.
Spearco Intercooler:
* I had this custom-made for me. It has a 2 1/4" ports where the return is off the top. It's 24"x3.5"x6.5" (LxWxH)
Comptech FPR:
* I had originally chosen a Vortech 'piggyback' FMU. This caused all sorts of problems with the car and I ended up using a Comptech FPR. This is fully adjustable and is a very good unit. It is used on all the Comptech S/C kits. It uses Earl's fittings and is a solid system.
Blitz Blowoff valve:
* I just got the basic blow-off valve
Synapse MAP Boost Limiter:
* This goes in series with the MAP sensor to eliminate it from reading boost.
Walbro in-tank fuel pump:
* This is a 250 lph unit that fits in the tank and should provide enough fuel for upto 450hp
AutoMeter Boost Guage:
* Just the 'phantom' face boost-guage with a custom-made pillar mount
Mugen T-Stat & Fan Switch:
* Just some anti-detonation measures. Along with some water-wetter it should reduce any 'hot-spots' in the cylinder head that could cause pre-ignition. The operating temperature of the motor is also reduced by a few degrees

Manifold:
* I decided to spend the extra $$$$ to get this done in stainless-steel. It's much stronger and better quality. I have asked my fabricator to make this of the same thickness as the Comptech Headers. I am using the upper (manifold) section of the Comptech Headers and replacing the A-pipe to one that will feed the turbo along with a down-pipe. The wastegate dump-tube will feed back into the exhaust. The turbo will be mounted to the tranny-mount (so that the manifold will torque with the motor... and not crack!). The downpipe will have the flex-tubing like the Comptech to accomodate for the motor torquing.

Honestly I expect 300+hp at the wheels at 5.5psi. Depending on how this runs... I might max out at 7psi. This SHOULD give 350hp on 91 octane safely. Anything beyond that (I think the motor can take 10psi)... won't be considered until I have some programmable engine-management-system.

My biggest concern on this whole project is detonation. I have several advantages to the Comptech S/C (for the same boost-level):

(1) Intercooled intake charge (approx 50-70 degrees cooler)
(2) Slower boost-buildup. This lessens the vaccum-to-boost transition and any 'dip-in' effects that might cause a lean condition
(3) Lower engine-operating temp and reduction of any 'hot-spots' in the cylinder-head

I will post a follow-up to this with pictures over the weekend!!

Video

I don't have one of those digital cameras that take .mpeg's, but I
might be able to borrow one.. we'll see.

The cost is very competitive with the Comptech S/C, except for this particular setup where I used a very expensive turbo and wastegate. Basically you get much more goodies and "bang-for-the-buck"!

That is a nice turbo and wastegate. What's the A/R on that turbo?

Are you planning a water spray setup to cool down the intercooler?

PICS -- Please!

Sounds nice!

You should consider using an AEM managemnt system; I've seen a huge success as well as remarkable gains with it!!!

Audi link.

I don't have pics, but we did something similar on a buddies RX7 turbo...

The power would go WAY UP on a dry day!!!

The misters come with "drip systems" and also for cooling patios in dry climates...

I haven't really thought of the intercooler-spray... although it might be an option down the road.

AEM currently doesn't have a system out forthis car that's plug 'n play. I suppose I could get the generic system and wire the entire thing... but I don't want to do that.

This isn't my race-car... its a daily-driver... and one day I would want to sell it... so I don't want to go down that route.

Knowing me I'll get bored of the turbo and sell it within the year

Sweet, let have another west cost meet when you get done and broken in. We should have a show down between the Comptech S/C against your Turbo!!

The 6spd should easily handle the power.

A meet sounds OK... we'll see when its done completely.

I am pretty sure I'd hit 13.7 or 13.8 NA... so I am expecting 12's with the turbo... hopefully
