Trunk Popper Issues

Ever since I got my car (Sept. '02) I noticed its somewhat difficult to open the trunk. When I pop the trunk via remote or in car, the popper lifts the trunk about an inch. When I go to lift the trunk lid up, I have to really lift it high (near the maximum it can open) to get the lid to stay proped up.

What happens to my mom especially, but sometimes I, is that we open the trunk lid to put stuff in the trunk, and it was not lifted high enough so the lid falls down on our hands or once on my mom's head when she was retrieving stuff from the back part of the trunk. I usually instinctively now open the lid all the way whenever I open the lid, which is sometimes a pain in the ass when I'm carrying heavy shit.

I had an '03 TL-P loaner once and I noticed that no only did the trunk pop a little more at first (1.5 to 2 inches), not much effort was needed to prop the trunk open. I know they make trunk springs for heavier lids with spoilers (I have no spoiler), but can a dealer adjust the springs I have? Does anyone else have a similar issue with their trunk lids?

If you have a spoiler on the trunk this will happen.

My trunk lid has always only opened about an inch. I've thought of this as a 'feature' rather then a 'problem'. It does stay up when I put it up (I've never been bumped in the head).

I don't have a spoiler.

Pappy, I mentioned i had no spoiler

Chris, so yours is the same? Do you find it to be annoying? I wonder why the loaner car I had operated much better. I believe there is some part you can adjust inside the trunk to affect the trunk popper. On a side note, I was at my dealer's service shop and watched a guy fixing something in a TL trunk (he was IN the trunk, lying on his back with his legs sticking out. I think he was changing the trunk springs for a spoiler and nothing proped up the lid well. I guess he moved his body enough in the car trunk to get the lid to drop down, right onto his knees. Ouch, I could see his pain!

I have the same problem. Previously, it used to prop up like 3 inches or so, now its just an inch. But it stays up pretty easily...

I dont know if this warrants a trip to the dealership though, for me at least...

I guess they all operate pretty much the same. A spoiler does make it heavier though. If the trunk is wide open, a gust of wind could get you coldcocked!

I don't mind that it is popped up just an inch. In fact, I think the loaner had a much more similar pop up. It's after you personally lift it up is what was different. Is the trunk supposed to help at all to lift? I know there are no shocks like in our hood but isn't there something else to helps it lift. That mysterious loaner TL haunts me!

Did you have this done CO-CL-S because of the same reason?

The stock springs can be adjusted. Dealer should do this for you with no problem. I can't see the lid not staying up, without a spolier.

You're not on an incline are you? If your car is facing slightly uphill (and in my case i have a spoiler) I once had it come down on my head. Ouch, but thick skull so I was fine.

Hmm..yea sometimes I'm parked on an incline, but a lot of times I notice this when I'm not on one. Next time I goto the dealer, I'll have them check it out.

it should voluntarily go ALL THE WAY up after u open it say 45 degrees or so. Before that it will come back down but u shouldnt have to lift it up all the way up for it to stay there.

i think someone did report some kinda problem with the hinge or that curved metal rod thingy being too weak and breaking.

I have a spolier, and mine only opens an inch. I asked the dealer to take a look at it last time I was in, and he said it was already as tight as it could be. Personally, I don't know if I believe him, but if he was telling the truth, I think Acura really needs to find a stronger trunk popper. I'd buy an aftermarket one if there was such a thing. Heh... OBX trunk popper...

I believe SSAutoChrome has a 2 month back order on those. Try the Comptech poppers with laser cut polished screws!
