Transmission Problem

I own a 2001 Acura-CL Type S. It is 5 months old and has 11,000 miles on it. I bought it brand new. I was driving home from work on Tuesday 6/19 and started having transmission problems, no 2nd or 3 rd gear. I took it to my dealer (Acura 101 West) and they said the internals of the transmission were really bad. They were going to get me a new transmission from the factory. I should expect to arrive today. The dealership is great, I get good service from them, I have a free loaner, so no complaints.

A little info on my driving habits:
I live in Southern California. I drive home every day up Pacific Coast Highway and over the Santa Monica Mountains. I do down shift to a lower gear on the down side on the mountain, but nothing very drastic. I do love fast cars, but I am an older gentleman (over 50) and don’t race (it least that’s what it tell my wife, but she know better). I do step on it every once in a while.

I would hope down shifting down a mountain wouldn’t cause a transmission to need replacement.

Has anyone else had transmission problems?

I’ll let you know had I make out when I get my car back.

First, welcome on this site.

Normal driving inclunding downshifting to have some engine braking is not supposed to mess up your transmission. I had a vibration shifting 1-2, dealer replaced a soleniod and it's a bit smoother.

On this BB some other members had similar problems as yours and had also their transmission replaced. CLS transmission is a very complex system that's more prone to failure.

welcome aboard! first, you're not the only one here with tranny problems. i had mine replaced about 3 months ago. someone else here had his replaced recently due to something similar to what you're experiencing. check the archives. at least it's under warranty and you're getting a new tranny. good luck.

Can using sport shift a lot mess up your tranny even more? I know I use it often and sometimes just downshift when on the highway a lot.

to tell you the truth , I have had my car at the dealer twice already and he tells me all is fine. I think ti still shifts a little rough compared to some other, but I guess I will just have to wait till it dies and get it replaced then.
They really should have put a better tranny in the CL-S

and welcome to the board

thholr,
What dealership are you going to, I am starting to have a lot of problems with my tranny, like slipping when shifting gears, suttering or shaking of the tranny when taking off. ALL this that has been happening in the last week!! Nalley Acura says nothing is wrong with it, but when your tach is bounching off the revlimiter and you're not going anywhere for a few sec then slaming into gear, that seems to be a problem to me...???...just was wondered where you have taken yours??
