Transmission Advice Requested

Hi everyone, my name is chelsey and I am currently in trouble with my 2001 Acura, CL Type S. The other day I was driving it at 65 mph when it immediately down shifted to 1st gear and almost getting me into a wreck. I had to get to work so I continued on. This ime it wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear on occasions but I made to work safely.
I had it towed to two different mechanics. Both gave me codes p0730 and p1740 and said the trans would need an overhaul, estimating me $3,300 to $3,700.
Can you guys please confirm their troubleshooting and offer any advice on what I should do next, before I sell my car. Thanks guys.

Glad you're okay. I'm not sure if you're aware but the automatic CL had a flawed transmission from the factory that was never resolved. Any rebuild they offer won't fix the inherent issue. If you want to keep the CL then put an accord trans in. Info here:

They designed these trans to have a very smooth 2-3 shift. At the point of the 2-3 shift, 2 and 3 are engaged at the same time, when this occurs 2 is supposed to drop out quickly and 3 is supposed to engage quickly...these transmissions don't do that, the partial engagement of 3 is prolonged making for a very smooth shift but causes rapid wear of the clutch, this causes excessive debris which plug up certain orifices which when fully plugged make the trans believe that is needs to be in 2nd gear...etc. That is what you experienced.
If you get the trans rebuilt, in another 100k you're going to be in the same boat. During the end of this recall Honda was replacing transmissions with and updated a/t control unit that was supposed to cause 3 to engage quicker resulting in a more noticeable 2-3 shift but transmission life was greatly extended, this problem also extended to Honda Odyssey and MDX. I've personally changed a few Odyssey trans with pcms at the dealership. If you end up getting the trans repaired try to get your hands on the most current pcm you can find, i believe the most current part no. is 37820-PGE-A62, but I would call your local Acura dealer for their most current part number and do a search on car-part.com to see if you can find one at a fraction of the costs. Also, check on security immobilizer information when you call Acura, the Odysseys didn't require key reprogramming if memory serves me right, it's been several years since I have done one....those vans are becoming a rarity.
