Transmission 3 months out of warranty, acura no goodwill, help?

01 CL-S. First transmission replaced in 04 at 50,000. Car was bought in June of 2001. FF to today: car has 102,000 miles and is 96 months old and the transmission is gone. I am 3 months out of the extended warranty period and 7,000 miles under. Cost quoted for the transmission is $5,300 with new PCM, and it needs new motor mounts for $400. That leaves me at $5,700. It needs new tires and the timing belt replaced. If you total everything up it would cost more than the car is worth, if I sold it right now.

First off is this a good price and is the new computer really necessary?

Second how have people fought this? I called corporate Acura and complained (a few hondas in the family) they are reviewing my case, decision by tomorrow. Obviously I feel Acura should replace their POS tranny since it's only 3 months out and under miles.

Any comments or advice is certainly appreciated.

if they dont replace it see if you can find one from a junk yard off a wrecked cl or something. i just recently bought a spare transmission off a wrecked cl about a month ago for $750 just in case mine goes out since it have high miles and im about to put a blower on.

Acura has offered to pay for $3000 of the $5300.
Still questionable.

Sounds like the dealer is trying to really stick it to you. When I did mine Acura paid 3k and I had to cover the rest. It cost me $780.00 for mine. I was in the same situation as you are in right now. I just had to pay for the labor. Which was the 780. The total bill was around $3,800.00 Call other dealers and tell them what Acura client services is doing for you, and ask what your part of the bill would be.

$5,300.00 sounds way to damn high!

Also since I paid the $780.00 I got a 3 year 36k mile warranty on the new tranny.

I was two months out of warranty but i had put in a call 2 days before the warranty was up to report tranny acting funny. I also only had 63K or so miles.

Good luck

I know these trans are still hard to get ahold of, even for the dealers. Outside warranty work, they turn people away because they can't get them to sell. They're basically remanufacturing them and shipping them out in a pretty quick rotation, with obligated / wararnty work taking precedent. My dealer mechanic friend changes trans fluid every 2nd oil change, and I followed suit on my wife's 99 TL (4 speed) which went 250k on original trans.

Good luck wih that.

They don't have to pay for any of it if they don't want to. It's out of warranty. Their not obligated to do shit. So I'd take thier already very generous offer to cover the $3k.

My car isn't shifting smoothly and I'm fearing I might be on tranny #2 just about 29,000 miles after the last one was put in.

I'm already shopping for a new car

I don't see the point in paying out the ass for a new tranny, just so it can f!*k itself again.

ive had like 7 honda acuras .. my '01 had three trannys all under warranty no prob ... but my 98 accord v6 which shares an equally shity tranny lost its tranny about 2 years ago which put it at about 7 -8 yrs old ... granted i had 50K miles ... honda replaced it all no cost ... at one point on a previous occasion i called dick cooliver , only got his personal sec. but this was for a friend with an '02 oddessey also got her a free tranny ... they know they fucked up dont let them off the hook ... no honda should ever need a trans or an engine for 200k period !

I learned a long time ago to be persistant and not to stop..
I sold saturns and all there outlooks w/roof leaked everytime it rained (the drain hoses where too short) and they could not fix it. The people the were persistant got new outlooks from GM the people that where not still have leaky roofs. The same goes for any company if they can get away with you paying for it THEY WILL they will try a few times to get you to pay for it cuz it is saving them thousands and most people will stop after they have been told "NO" two or three times.. Just keep going up the chain..
The customers would come to the service writers for a new car and they would say no so then they would go to the service manager and he would say no , then regional manager says NO you keep climbing the chain and writing E-mails and letters!

That seems like alot of work, but I understand the grueling process to make them pay for their mistakes...I'm going in to Rick Case today to see if I can get the problem assessed and if it is the tranny, that they will replace it free of charge, which will make the new one tranny #3.

I understand being persistent, but being out of warranty is being out of warranty, and I'll do my best to raise hell, but if that doesn't work and they decide to charge me 3k+ for a rebuilt trans I'll just consider other options. My friends father is a co-owner of a honda dealership down here and I've been looking at some Si's..

I still owe a few thousand on the CL but if it does need a new transmission I don't see the point in keeping it. Its going to need a T-belt job done soon along with a few other things, I checked with the trade in value and I should get around 5-6k for it against an already discounted car. If the diagnosis is bad I don't really care anymore that I'll be taking a 3k hit in my payments. Oh well.

Goodluck thoug Craig, keep us updated on what happens!

I got it down to $1800. Acura is still paying $3000, so a total of $4800. It does include the new PCM, so that is $1000. I have begun my e-mail/letter assault on Honda/Acura. Does anyone have any information Acura (above GM level?)

District office, Acura corporate (should be a number in your owners manual).

Explain that due to the economy you cant afford dropping that kind of money on a transmission that wasnt properly designed. You most likely wont get it for free, but most dealers will work on the price.

my replacement trans is crap and I just keep documenting it so when it DOES go out after warranty, it will be all on them. POS has 15K on it and pauses between 2-3 shift, slips intermittently under hard accelleration, etc.....and my warranty will be up on dec 31st

That's BS my dad has an 02 TLS and hes on his 4th tranny, getting the fourth one was 1000km after warranty, they refused to pay for it and told him a similar story as to what your hearing. What he did was hound them, did not leave them alone called a couple times a day for 3 weeks went over the dealers head and made somewhat of a scene. In the end our dealership covered 100% of the costs, as they should be! They sold you a defective product and should be more than happy to replace it.

How cold does it get in your area? So is it dead, or just acting funny and they want to look at it?
What symptoms are you experiencing?

It will cost you $1,500 less to buy my CL and you have a brand new transmission (rebuilt 7K miles ago with stronger then OEM parts Amsoil ATF and cooler) and neww motor mount and alot of aftermarket goodies..
B&G shocks/springs, progress RSB, NSX front calipers, Wood wheel , OBX headers and alot more!!

look in the for sale section!

Why sell it after investing so much money in it? If the car works fine for next 2-3 years and then you take it to garbage dump -- its still a better deat than 4K, 2K per year is a good deal, better than geting in brand new car that depreciates like 5 K per year

I am really getting annoyed with this car, I am just SICK of dumping money into her... Yes there is alot of aftermarket parts that I installed myself with the help of some of my tech friends, Yes it still drives great and looks great but now the rear main seal is leaking slowly. I went to the guyy that did my tranny and he said that they inspected it when doing the transmission and it looked FINE, ell guess what it is LEAKING now.. I just dont wanna dump any more mony into her and I just started a new Job where I am making alot more money then I am used to so its time from something NEW... I am taking over a 2009 maxima sv fully loaded lease from a friend for $375 a month

See what happen when Acura Settle that transmission law sue a few years ago? Lawyer gets the money and current Acura owner get screwed! I have never seen a dime from that law sue and I am the original owner! Now Acura have the settlement paper to show they don't have to do shit for us even if it is 1 mile or 1 day over their extended warranty!

Man, I just took my car into Acura yesterday. Tranny has been acting up. Their Acura Representative is willing to pay 50% of the new tranny. Not sure if its gonna be as good of a deal as $3,000 but its better than nothing. Your price does seem a little high. On my last car I had to pay for a rebuilt tranny out of pocket and installed cost me about 3K.

What symptoms are you experiencing?
slams into lower gear when you accellerate from 50 on up I think it is slamming into 4th but cannot be sure (intermittent)

when it gets around 15F or below there is a NOTICABLE pause between 2-3 shift the first time, it is not as noticeable on the second and is usually gone by the third time.

I am used to getting 31mpg+ and now I am down to 28.5 on the highway Car has 89K on it now 87K before the trip... In the spring I had 80K on the car when I went to MI and got 30mpg+.
