tranny question, please respond

Hi
I just got my car 3 weeks ago, it has about 1500 miles on it.
I noticed this at about 500 miles:
when I put in in drive, move forward, stop, and then put in reverse,
it makes a nasty metal ding sound. If I do that d-> reverse without
rolling forward then it seems to be ok, a bit jerkey, but without
any funny sounds. I am not sure if it's normal. Does anybody else have
this kinda of thing happening?
I have an appointment on Wed, I am not sure if I should go or not...
thanks

That may or may not be a sign of your tranny failing. Make sure to get it documented by your dealership, so in the event it acts up, they are aware of your previous complaint. When she dies you know ! Their is a dedicated section on this board all for transmission woes !
Remember: When in doubt, ask ! Don't assume !

Keep us posted !

The keyword here is "nasty"... As Fabvsix said, there is a dedicated "Tranny Problems" section. However, there is that main point of what constitutes nasty. Kind of like describing a bad cough to a MD by fax -- hard to know what is a reverse shift-fork/selector moving/engaging vs. a "we better check this out...something is just not right here sound"

If you are that concerned, just take it to the dealer and you might even see if they will let you jump in another car just to compare (Doesn’t hurt to ask…)

Might not be a tranny issue. Specially since it's so new, & a 2002. You might be feelling what happends when the car is put in reverse. The CL-S has a long deley from D to R, or R to D. It takes a few seconds for the gear to engage. So if you go from D to R, or D to R really quick with out coming to a full stop, it will make a noise, & jerk. Take it in anyway, just don't be suprised if they say it's "normal"

Personally I think this is normal. My car does this all of the time. It's not as loud as yours seems to be, but like you said, it only happens if you're rolling a little bit before you put it in drive. I've never had the jerky thing though. My '98 CL 3.0 did this too... I think it's normal for these cars. I remember someone else posted a topic like this about 8 months ago or so and a lot of people had the same sound. I think you're OK. I would say only go to the dealer if you're looking for an explination b/c I don't think there's anything for them to fix.

Well, I guess I am not gonna go this time...
The car drives fine. And don't see any problems with it
other than the sound. I'll wait a little bit and monitor it for now...
Thanks a lot guys for your help!
