I'm just embarassed. My friend's '02 RSX-S runs 13.30 @ 109 MPH and that thing is torque-less.

Yeah but its also geared nicely so its almost never in the low tq area. And that sucks about the water, I've been to 5 drag strips and they all had enough area to drive around the water. And one of them actually gets pissed when fwd's drive through, because they drag a ton of water to the launching pad.

The track I go to puts cones up on both sides of the water box so you can't drive around

Come to Norwalk, its one helluva track. So sticky that if you stand in one spot for too long you'll be leaving your shoes. :o

You can actually hear the VHT grabbing the tires as it pulls up to the launch pad.

No preloading is using the e-brake and preloading the clutch so you just need to modulate the gas pedal.

Yes there is, unless your clutch isnt stock. I can get my car moving in first gear without any gas, you just have to slip the clutch. It takes practice and can be harmful if not done right, but it does help driveline shock, which in turn helps prevent wheelhop & spin. All you are doing is clutch modulation, there is no pre-load involved.

The torque on this car is fucking great. The other day I mistakenly was in 3rd gear instead of 1st. I got the car moving in 3rd completely smooth and without coming close to stalling. LOL

It's not possible to start from 5th or 6th gear in this car. The transmission locks out those gears once you are at a stop.

As for the RX8 - with enough clutch slip, anthing is possible. It also burns oil like a mother and gets about 12 MPG

And to top it off... they're slow

My brothers 93 SHO had the accelerator cable break, and he slipped the clutch enough to get it eventually into 5th gear and make it home. Idle in 5th is still not that fast, and the clutch was pretty much spent after that effort.

And steve its too bad we dont live closer, i'd like to get a ride in your car to see my clone, only with a little blower whine.

I would try a hard launch in 2nd just for experimentation sake.

Do you lose traction when going WOT in 1st?

It takes practice. You've got your timing down on shifting, just need to speed it up. For me, it's the 2nd to 3rd gear that spooks me...mis-shift on that one back to 1st or miss the 4-5 shift back to 3rd and welcome valve bent city. Also, get the short shifter and a different shift knob. A lower profile shift knob reduces the throw as well.

I already have the short throw and a Momo shift knob that is much shorter than the stock knob. I don't think it's possible to shift back to 1st once you go over 30 MPH. A plate comes over and blocks 1st gear so shiting from 2nd to 1st at redline isn't really a concern. 3rd to 2nd however is possible at redline.

Steve,

I was thinking about a 4,500-4,7500rpm launch in 2nd gear but I again was afraid of breaking something in the drivetrain. I actually get good traction in 1st provided I start easy up until 2,000rpm and then I break loose a little around 6,500rpm. If I slam into 2nd gear hard I loose traction again depending on the surface conditions. I'm running 235/45's (nearly an inch wider than stock) that have helped traction tremendously.

Hey Steve, putting RSX wheels on DR's is the best idea.

As for shifting, there are ways to minimize the possibility of a mis-shift, especially from 3rd to 2nd. Grab the shifter with your palm facing the passenger side, thumb pointing down, and pull straight down. Might feel awkward the first few times, but it works great, and you'll never hit 2nd instead of 4th that way!

Yeah I've never come close to hitting 2nd instead of 4th. Palm down! Tons of RSX guys have gone from 3rd to 2nd and blown their motors. Every single one of them were pistol gripping the shifter.

While suspension, clutch, tires and driver's skills make a difference, traction is the only reason I wouldn't never get manual tranny for FWD vehicle. Having fun while rolling, yes but not tracking. RWD OR AWD project car has to be manual, so just have fun Steve!

I don't want to be around when she explodes.

But one bar is 14.5 PSI. One atmosphere is considered 14.7 PSI which is pretty close to 1 Bar but not exactly.

Well the tq converter really helps prevent driveline shock, but ultimately the 6speed offers better efficiency so it will be faster with the same mods, it just needs more attention to the susp & tires.
