I did when I got rear-ended. Most of it was worked out between the body shop and insurance, but I was told it would have been about $4K just to do a paint job.

I work for Farmers Insurance as a claims adjuster ad can tell ya pretty much if you want it done right you are going to be paying for it. The last total paint I wrote for was a 01 bmw 3 seriers that got keyed on every frewakin panel. even the rocker panel cover under the door. Estimate came to $5.5k after supplements etc. The body shop removed the fixed glass and also redid the undersides of panels etc. If you go to a shop and say you are going to be payong and want it done right I bet you could work somewhere around $4k or a little lower but make sure they are not just masking etc, you want them to take off glass moldings and all (if thats what you want). Then again you could go get a Mayco Ambassador paint job for $200 and they can spray paint the entire car with 1 swipe and no masking (okay sarcasm off).

yeah you are looking at a pretty penny for an out of pocket expense.

Unless you got connections... but I would not go that route.... When someone cuts you a deal, you can ALWAYS expect it to take more time than estimated.
