Torque Steer

Even though I have an automatic I get alot of torque steer, always to the right. I even got alot of wheel hop in the rain today, mostly in the right wheel. Thinking that I had alot of low end torque, I decided to look at my old 1/4 mile timeslips. I had 2 60 foots in the 1.9 range (and 15.3/15.4 1/4's) and a 60 ft as bad as 2.6 (and a 15.8 1/4 mile). My best 1/4's were 15.2 but I had 2.4 60 ft. Any ideas what's causing that torque steer? And why with good 60 foot times would I get above average time. Keep in mind those times were before I got the headers and icebox. Just trying to figure things out before my next trip to the track.

230hp to the front wheels would do that

Torque & hp will do that when applied to the front wheels. Unless you have a broken motor mount or a broken suspension component, it sounds normal. With the car turned off, put your hands on the engine and try to rock it front and back. It there is a lot of movement you may have broken a mount. You should hear the block banging against the chassis under hard acceleration if this is the case though. Look over your suspension very well. I wonder if a busted strut on that front right wheel might be problem. Check them out.

Try'n to help,

Jim

I thought our cars were notorious for torque steer. I know i've felt it in mine.

I get torque steer and wheel hop on a daily basis. Gotta love FWD w/o LSD.

Wheel hop is a bitch. But I really don't get that much torque steer. I think the torque-sensing steering system has something to do with that.

Well, at least a lot less than my previous FWD cars.

Sorry guys I've been away and recovering from Superbowl weekend. What I was asking is .... "what actually causes one wheel to pull harder than the other, but not just on my car, any car. Secondly, yes I'm sure about a 1.9 60 ft. Unless the timing device was screwed up that's what I got. Here's a link to see the timeslips. It includes my best and worst times. The 2 early runs were against an early 90's civic with a B18C swap. The 3rd run was against a Monte Carlo with a 350 engine, and the last - I was in in D3 going against a Civic Hatchback. I was Car #66. Sorry its a little blurry.

Torque steer is what causes one wheel to pull harder then the other on FWD cars.

The main reason is that the 2 front wheels aren't locked together, but can spin at different rates (good for turns).

Check out: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm (and keep hitting the next button)

The LSD (limiting slip defferential) on the CLS 6spd does a decent job of limiting torque steer, but it's still there. I get alot of torque steer when I'm really pushing the car at it's limits with questionable road conditions (rain, snow, sand, expansion joints in the road, etc), but that's to be expected.

Oh, yeah. The 1.9 second 60' foot is almost hard to believe. That's LS1 territory with a precision launch. I had a perfect launch last time I went to the track, brake-torqued to 3000 RPM, and I got a 2.294 second 60' time.

With that kind of a launch, you should be running mid 14"s, not low 15"s. Weird.

EDIT -- Where do you live?

Like I said I'm going by the timeslips. When I look at other people's times its hard to believe I had a 1.9, and then still managed to pull such bad trap ET's. You said you had a perfect launch - what determines that? BTW I power braked to 2000 RPM. As far as where I'm living - at the time of those runs I was living in Honolulu, now I'm living in between Miami/Ft lauderdale.

Even with the SC, i don't think our torque steer is bad at all.

make sure the track you were at was not high elevated. if you were not running at sea level, that could explain your bad et's.
at 2400 ft., i could barely break 14's with similar mods as you. but at sea level its a whole different story.
