Topping off the tank

I know the Type S uses 91 octane... but nobody sells 91 anymore. The lowest ppremium I can get is 92, which is fine, no big deal. But if I have 3/4 of a tank, can I just top that off with 89?

Yes, you most certainly can.

Just try it out and see if you notice much of a difference (shouldn't be). Why? Is there a significant savings?

Savings? Not really... But I think I'm the only one who still uses cash at gas at gas stations, and sometimes I might just save a quarter and top it off with 89... just for shit$ and giggles. What about half 92/93 and hale 89? That averages out to 90.5... but does it work that way?

I have asked this question before and never got an answer. I believe that the numbers posted at the pump and the numbers posted in the manual are computed by different methods. I know I tried to figure it out but it seemed like mundane details to me. Anyone know the truth?

Umm... why are you sweating the 92 octane? 91 is the minimum recommended octane. It's not like you have to use 91 and only 91. Hell, I pump all the 93 I can get my hands on into my car. Wish we had Sunoco 94 here in Texas.

I used the Speedpass when I lived in Minnesota. Had to give it up when I moved to Kansas (no Mobil stations here).

Do you use the wand or do you have the sensor mounted in the back windshield?

I miss the speedpass, it's so cool....

I suppose you're right. What will I save? a nickel? We have SUnocco 94 around here, but its 10% ethanol or something like that. In my 87 Legend I noticed a difference between the 92 at Sheetz and 94 at Sunocco. It alot better on 94. When my mom would borrow the car, and use up all the gas, I had her fill it and not tell me what she put in. I was able to tell the difference between 94 and 92. But that car had 180,000 miles on it.

Astroboy calls me an "elitist prick", yet I don't have to explain that I have a 4x4 to "tow the boat and jet skis". Go figure.

Jump on down off your high horse, Astroboy.

I now understand. I think I'm overthinking this. I'll just use 92 all the time. It's not like I'll save anything by putting in a quarter tank of 89...
