Top 10 Upgrades/Modifications

I have a basic 2001 CL and am looking to make some modifications and am trying to get a feel for some of the most standard and must have upgrades.

What are the most common/typical upgrades to a CL .. I would also appreciate if you could tell me of any upgrades that you might have made..

Thanks!

Please do a search for some of the topics But to answer...most of the people that have mods have gotten:

Comptech Headers 20-32hp
Comptech Springs approx. 1.5 drop
Comptech Sways

Either AEM/Xephyr2K Cold Air Intake 3-10hp
Some have installed the Apexi VAFC

Not sure if I have missed anything...but there you go.

CL 3.0 '98 - Cleared bumper, Hiper/Piaa/Polarg bulbs all around, PIAA 1700x fogs, AEM CAI, V1, and Mugen Pedals.

Thanks for that list .. I am trying to get a feel of what most people have gotten, so I can put together, a <font color=red>"most popular upgrades"</font> or a <font color=red>"must have upgrades"</font> list. I know that a list like that wouldve helped a newbie like me ..

Anyways .. how about upgrades on things like, window tints, tire rims, indiglo emblems, wood trims, shift knobs, stereo upgrades, speaker, dash, pedals ... etc

Tires are also popular to upgrade depending on your driving. But it would not be a must upgrade.

Check my signature. I think the BEST performance gain is rims/tires. But HIGH QUALITY rims and tires. I shaved around a 1/2 second off my 0-60 by removing almost 50 lbs of unsprung weight from my car and increasing traction with the tires. Around the corners, well, let's say I'll destroy any CLS (regardless of horsepower) on anything other than a straight line. Our stock tires are horrible and our stock rims are SUPER heavy.

PS - I am expecting some heat for this statement, but it's true.

G-Tech (Full tank of gas, 60F, VSA off, SS) - 5.94 seconds
V-1 Hardwired, Comptech Sways on order

I hate to admit it but I second Tech on this one. I have springs and stock tires. I drove his car with the new rims and tires with stock susp. He would out corner me any day just because of those damn tires. IMO tires are a must!!!!! a car this fast needs more grip...

Technique,

I would totally agree with you. The best performance value is the suspension/tires/rims package. I agree that reducing the unsprung mass will make a whole world of a difference. When I had my Prelude Si, I shaved off .2-.3sec on top of the already .3-.4 sec off of the 1/4 mile with headers/exhaust/intake. My rims/tires were 17 x 7 SSR Integral on 215/40/17 tires. Lap times were even more improved!

For stock look and less weight,
you can get the TL-S wheels.

Closer,

Really? How heavy are the TL-S ones? They are 17" right?

They (Tl-S wheels) should be slightly lighter than the CL-S wheels as they are 17x6.5 and not 17x7 in the CL-S.. I don't know the exact weight differences but just for the sheer size differential there should be less weight in the TL-S ones.

For tires I would go with 235/40/18's but I sure like the weights of those 17" SSR Competition wheels they have at tirerack.com,
only 14.4 lbs per wheel.

Holy shit. Do NOT replace your rims with the TL-S rims!!! 6.5 width SUCKS ASS!

Get some 17X7.5 or 17X8. Hell, my rims are 17X8 and are like 10 lbs lighter than the TL-S rims.

I went with the SSRs and pioneered the Toyos on the CLS. The stick was already awesome with the Toyo 235s, but the wheels are really something...

1. The wheels dance over washboard like they are on air. (A guy at TireRack said one guy with a CLS got the wheels with stock tires and he had a skipping problem with his CD player on a washboard road. Problem solved.) The ride is now better than stock and I'm running 39psi f/r with the 48lb lighter rims (total weight reduction tires+wheels). The tires make the car stick so well, that if you let someone look at the speedo in some twisties, they won't believe it.
2. The wheel weight not only improves the feel of the steering and the feel over bumps, but also makes the car feel like I dumped a couple of people out of the car. I was running quicker the other day at 85 degrees out than had previously felt at 40 degrees out. (And my car really feels faster in cold weather).

3. I'm getting the headers -- these seem to be expensive, but worth the front wheel dyno gains.

Finally, if I ever had to chase people for a living, I'd get some better brake stuff. I think the Brembos are very expensive. Perhaps, someone has figured out a slotted/dot 4/brake fluid solution. This car needs a lot more braking in the front. They should have put 12.x inch brakes in the front. (Not a lot of fun, but if you get an idiot in front of you, you wan't to stop fast.)

The air induction, sways, springs and the rest well...

I, for one, would like to see a before and after graph of the headers WITH a CAI. Not just one or the other.

I would also like to see just how the sway bars work without the springs. The car should get a change to oversteer with the increased roll-resistance in the rear. The car with the Toyo's and Tires already seems great. I asked a few "test subjects" about the perception of "roll" and they didn't notice. Perhaps those stock tires with their bubble-gum sidewalls are playing suspension (when they should really be holding the tread on the ground).

(my .02)

(Also, my thanks to Technique for his pioneering efforts on the SSR Competion wheels.)
