Too much oil.. should I take some out?

I changed the oil (with an oil boy extractor) and refilled. The Mobile 1 Syn oil came in a 5 quart jug. I eye balled the pour and I thought I got it right. Drove for a couple of days and the oil darkened up so I can see it.

Should I remove some oil because I am obviously over.

i'd suck some more out..pretty sure you can blow engine seals if you put in too much oil.

Yeah I have the pneumatic one from Griot's. Hook it up to a compressor and go have a beer while it sucks all the oil out of the car.

That's right. No need to go under the car and rip apart your knuckles getting at the oil pan nut.

It's $50 and about $9 for shipping. Go to Overton's and search for "Oil Extractor"

Hmm, 5 quarts should be just about perfect.

The correct amount is 4.6 quarts, PLUS the oil filter capacity. When I put in 5 quarts with a Mobil 1 M-104 filter, it's perfect.

Weird. Nonetheless, if it shows overfill on the dipstick, then you should definitely drain some out.

would this work with the ...

"transmission and differential fluid, gear oil, antifreeze or power steering fluid! (Not for use on brake fluid as this fluid is corrosive and will break down the seals.)"

oh wow!

Definitely justifies the cost then.

Stejus, did you replace the oil filter?

Do you guys believe that oil extractor is getting all the dirt out of the bottom of the pan?

I was thinking the same thing. Great idea but is it getting out the crap that causes me to have to change my oil in the first place?

Any studies on this?

Oh yeah, Make sure you're on a level surface when checking your oil level. If I check mine in my driveway, it always says I have too much oil. If I'm on the street, It's right where it neds to be. This is even with the dealer changing it.

If it's still over the mark I would drain some out.

I don't know if this qualifies as getting the dirt out from underneath but:

A Japanese magazine (Automechanic, Nov. 1997 issue) tested our Oil Extractor to see if it would be able to withdraw more oil versus draining the oil using the "drain plug" method. Great news! The Oil Extractor was able to withdraw an additional 71ml of oil on a late model Toyota. Due to the ultra tight packaging of engine compartments these days, it seems manufacturers are locating the drain plug in areas that compromise complete oil drainage. You're gonna love changing your oil!
Maybe the reasoning is that the oil catches/attracts to the dirt deposits, and if more oil is extracted then more dirt is removed?

griotsgarage has a better description but more pricey

Yes, replaced the oil filter.

If you get the straw all the way to the bottom, and the oil is warm, there's no reason the dirt/deposits will come out. I took it for a 10 minute ride and most, if not all, dirt should have been trapped in the oil filter.

All done with extracting that extra oil out. Sucked out just just enough to get it right on the mark.

One thing I noticed is that if you check the oil right after you shut down your engine, the oil level on the dip stick will show less than if you wait for a couple of minutes and then check. This must be due to the oil draining back into the pan.

I have a good reading if I check it after two minutes of shutting down. This should be good!

Good call sucking some out. The biggest problem with overfilling is if the oil level rises enough that the crankshaft splashes in it. This aerates the oil making it foamy which is all bad. Ideally, you'd have a pure vacuum in the sump. Dont know if in our cars that half a quart will do that though. Sometimes you can tell by quickly pulling the dip stick out after shutting it off. Bubbles = Bad.

That valve looks pretty simple to use. I have a similar setup on my lawn tractor where I plug in the tube and turn a screw and the valve opens and drains through the tube into my waste oil container. I like the oil boy for my auto's because there’s no mess and you don’t have to get under the car (except for the filter).
