considering that there is no warranty whatsoever, i would be sketchy. for 22k you can get a used 2000 S4 at a dealer with a 100k warranty, but with that chip (and im assuming its a private party seller) there is no warranty.
i just got my 2.7T A6 (same drivetrain as the S4) and the general concensus is that if you get an S4 or A6 with that drivetrain, and plan to chip it....have at least 6k sitting in an account somewhere for when you blow the turbo system out. ill admit, i was allllll gung ho about chipping my A6 but after a month of solid research, im holding off. dealers are on that like flies on shit.
ANY S4 or 2.7T A6 that has a turbo failure under warranty has to be PERSONALLY inspected by a representative of audi corporate before it gets any work done under warranty. having a spare chip doesnt work anymore, they can tell if its been swapped recently.
of course there is a huge segment that doesnt have problems with their turbos but those that due seem to get fucked over 99% of the time because audi has come down hard on the chips.
if you are looking for a used S4, stay away from 2000.
significant changes were made for 2001 to the engine and drivetrain to solve some turbo problems that plauged the 2000 model year.
if you are serious about an audi with the 2.7T drivetrain, do yourself a favor, pay a few extra grand, buy it from a dealer with the 100k warranty and STOCK. then spend your money on cosmetic/suspension/audio mods until that warranty is gone, THEN chip it up, otherwise you open the door to a very awful ass raping if any problems arise from overboosting those turbos

Mantis, some dealers install chips for the customers...if you find one of THOSE dealers, you are uptown. My local one does it, even boasts about it.

Mantis, I would take Jim's advice. I wouldn't buy 2000 S4 unless it has the upgraded oil return lines for the turbos. I would want a warranty on an S4 as well. There is a reason there are so many S4's available right now and why they have depreciated so much....original owners are afriad to own them out of warranty.
