Tire/Wheel Combo 17 VS 18?

Tire/Wheel Combo 17 VS 18?
All comments are welcome:
Here is the scoop. My mom will buy a 02 TL, not TLS. The base TL comes with the cheeziest (95 honda accord) rims. Acura went real cheap on those. To make my moms car look good while benefiting my ride as well heres my quick plan; Put the 17s from the CLS onto the TL and get new set of wheel/tire combo for the CLS.
Now, should I go with 17s or 18s rims?
I would like 18s, but concerned about the quality of the ride? Also, will I need to lower the car to make 18s look not out of place.
I really believe in upgrading the look and handling and 17s might only upgrade the handling with good tires of course. I dont want to regret my decision as I did the last time I had to make an upgrade of tire/wheel combo. Last time I went with the stock size of 15 and envyed everyone else 17s. I will review the board the previous posts on this topic, but all input is appreciated. Thanks all.

I'd say 17X8 with 235s. Or, 18X8 with 235's and don't lower if you get 18s, or lower 1" with 17"s.

Big Pimp,
Be careful with installing the Type S wheels on the TL. It may not fit. As I recall, the Type S rims would not fit on the CL-P due to the spacing between the strut housing and the rims.
Anyone can correct me on this?

Go with 18's for sure, I have 18's on my legend right now and I find the ride is not much different than the stock 16s. You can only tell when you hit shit like manhole covers.

On stock CLS rims and tires, I feel manhole covers and every irregularity in the road. But I try to drive around those as much as possible.

"Are you kidding? Do you mean hitting the manhole cover while it is standing upright or while it is covering a manhole? If manhole covers affect your ride, what the hell do potholes, speed bumps, cracks in the road, rocks, etc. do to you? Cause rollovers?"
-SC TL
Maybe where you live the road construction crews spend hours ensuring that there man hole covers dont stick out at all, but in seattle they obviosly dont car. I find that hitting those is worse than hitting most potholes, but anyways just get 18's as long as you have a 225/40 tire on there you wont run into trouble, its when you put 18's on a civic that the ride sucks.

I'm looking at 18x8 myself and also plan on lowering. There are a few members that have this combo and don't have any problems. I live in NY where potholes are dangerous but I'l take my chances..it looks great...

Go with 18's dude, just avoid the low profile tires. I know this one guy who says he has 30 series on his 19's now that is DAMN low, I think he had to special order them, they are on a legend and I think 225/30

I like the way 18's look but since I live in nyc a low profile tire is out of the question. I do not want to lower the car because of the roads. So my only option is to go with 18's with a midsize sidewall. But that will cut my hp by at least 10hp. Maybe I could get away with a light wheel combo, something in the 17-18pd range. Does anyone know of an 18" wheel in that weight range?

The rim size does not effect ride. It's the size of the tire's sidewall. My 18's are actually 1.75 inches smaller than my stock wheels, but I have 35 series tires. Nitto makes a 225/40/18 that, in my opinion, rides really nice.

Does anyone have 18s on their CL-S with the Sport Line kit? How much harsher is the ride from stock and do you get any tire rub or other problems? I definitely want 18s on my car and have seen other CLs with 18s using the Pro-Line kit or Comptech springs and think that they would look much nicer if the wheel gap could be reduced further. The Sport Line kit would accomplish this, but I'm thinking it may be too much of a drop for me. I don't want any tire rub or too much of a clearance problem. Any advise would be helpful.

Thanks for your comments everyone. However I am getting mixed messages. I think my prefered look would be 18X8 225/40/18, will this fit and what offset will I need? Also I know the speedo gets out of whack a bit, but how reasonable is it?
Another mixed message, some say that I have to lower to eliminate the gap, while others say 'do not lower'. Clarification needed. Thanks again,

for 225/40-18 you should go with 18X7.5 wheels, and the offset should be between 45 and 50..

Your spedo wont get out of wack unless you change the diamater of the whole wheel, Just have the place you buy the wheels from hook you up with the proper tires to avoid that, I went from 16's to 18's on my legend and the speedo is just fine

Lowering the car to reduce the gap is for appearence; 225/40-18 will be app 0.4 inches less diameter. The speedo/odometer will be app. 1.5% off (speedo reads 1.5% higher than actual speed)..
