Tire Help
Am picking up my 2001 3.2 CL-S on 5/14 and the first thing I want to do is put new tires on it. I am not familiar with this car at all. Looks like it came with Michelin Pilot HX MXM4. Are these good tires for the car? I am thinking about Yokahama AVID V4. Anyone have any other suggestions or should I stay with the original equipment tires.
The stock tires are NOT a good fit for this car at all.
Myself and a couple other members have gone with the Michelin Pilot A/S. If you need a all-season tire, these are the best money can buy. And they're expensive, but worth it. Another tire to really consider is the Sumitomo HTR+. Quite a few members have gone with this tire and are really enjoying them. Especially when they can be had for under $100/tire unlike the Pilot A/S which are right at $200/tire.

The stock tires are reasonable touring tires, but are not without their problems. They squeal and slip, and many have had to replace them because of bubbles.
You can replace them with other tires in a couple different sizes, but you need to review the specs yourself. The manual requests a 93 load rated tire for the Type S, and few tires in the 215/50-17 size meet this criteria.
Many have gone with 225 series tires including the 225/45-17 and the 225/50-17. The former tire is a little smaller then stock and the latter is larger then stock, so your odometer may be a tiny bit off.
The best sized matched tire is the 235/45-17, yet none of these have manufacturers that recommend mounting them on a 7" rim (which is what the Type S rim is). That being said, many on this board have mounted the 235/45 on the 7" rim without problems.
There are a lot of tire options when you consider the variety of sizes. You have to decide if you want all season or not, and if you want performance or not. Look at our signatures for options, or do a search. Check out Chod's FAQ in my signature.
Check out www.tirerack.com for a number of options available. Look at the actual individual tire specs if you want your odometer to be unchanged -- the stock tire rolls 819 times per mile.
