From my own expirence with older cars and different mechanics I came to conclusion that 90-95% of all mechanics are bunch of crooks, who are out to pump up as much money as they can from you. They suggest/threaten to have certain things fixed even if you dont' need it, and there is no way to check it.
These days its realy hard to find an honest mechanic.... I guess if I would ever find an honest mechanic, I would leave him tip... but this is so RARE !!!

No! Dealerships may charge more per hour than most of us make, but that is not what the mechanic makes. What we are talking about here is when a mechanic (probably somebody like Jens) goes out of their way to insure "our" car gets special treatment (I know they should all be treated that way, welcome to the real world) and helps us in our driving experiance.

Back in the days when I used to drive old Camry, I once went to change oil to some local shop. I said that I only want oil change. The fuking mechanic start telling me that I need to change my timing belt, that it can break any moment, that my trannsmission is leaking ( which latter turned out just a wet spot, not a leak ).
I was almost thinking about spending $600, but its good that my friend told me not to do it. Then I went to my friend's recomended mechanic, and he said that I dont need to do anything, and did not charge me anything. I felt such a relief, I felt like giving him 50 buks for saving me $600

I do, especially if its a major job. I had my suspension done by the mechanic emeritus over at Park Ave and I've never had a single problem or any unusual tire wear. If your mechanic wants more tips I'm sure he'll take that extra effort to do the job right. It's flattering and $50 can go a long way with a consciencous mechanic. I consider it an investment. Show your mechanic some respect and he'll show your car some.
Does anybody really think that is the mechanic that is making most of the money at a dealership?
