Throwing it from SS to Auto.......

Does it hurt the car if you are in SS and you move it over to auto while your moving? I was just curious about this cause i was about to do it the other night.

Until I read your post, it never crossed my mind that you couldn't. I didn't even read the owners' manual on this function. I had just assumed that you can go from auto - SS and vice versa at any speed, or standing still. Please correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.

when i got my car last year in march, I was taking a test drive in the CLS and the salesman was driving first showing me how the steptronic system worked...he was drivin around 50 mph and threw the SS to Auto and i was like wow...I asked if it hurts the car and he said not at all. I've been doing that throwing the SS to Auto and back for the whole year. I dont know if it hurts the car or not. If it does then OOPS!!

I'm pretty sure you can move from SS to auto and vice versa without harming your car. Though I haven't done it much to the CL, I constantly did it to the Audis, and so did the dealer when we were test driving them. So go ahead, no damage will be done.

Of course it won't hurt it. You should be able to go back and forth between the two modes at any speed.

Now, if you try moving the shifter to SS modes in the middle of an automatic shift, then there may be problems. I've never had this happen.

That's what I'm thinking, otherwise you should be fine b/c the tranny isn't going through any gear changes, only the ECU is being affected. At least I hope so b/c I switch back and forth while driving all the time.

I saw the sales guy do it during the demo mode and he said it was alright. Perhaps Wayne from Park Ave can settle the question once and for all. Wayne...?

Come now, people. Of course it's not harming anything - all it's doing is telling the ECU "ok, go back to controlling my shifts".
And if you notice, once you put it back into auto mode it almost always upshifts because auto mode is "gas saver" mode and it goes for whatever gear will give it the lowest rpms while maintaining decent torque (usually 4th or 5th depending on speed).

I've actually moved the shifter exactly IN BETWEEN shifts several times to see what would happen (i live on the wild side and have money to burn) .. and I actually saw the 2 LED goes on the dash and then immediately change to 3 w/ no problems. At that point I figured that this tranny was truly idiot proof.

Anyone know what would happen if you accidentally put the car into reverse while cruising .. is there a lock-out feature in this tranny (or all automatic tranny's) to prevent any serious damage?

Well, since you "live on the wild side and have money to burn," I nominate you as the tester for the reverse lock-out feature.

Yea, I did that a couple of times this weekend. I've been using SS a lot lately so I forgot I was driving "safely" in automatic mode with the girlfriend in the car.
