It's a cool feature, but have never hooked mine up, thought about it though. Have any of you actually used it?

What does it do if you hit the button? Do they answer?
It will be mute soon, when they go digital, ours is the older analog version, not upgradeable.

Will my OnStar-equipped vehicle's analog-only system still work after January 1, 2008?
No. As of early 2008, cellular carriers will no longer be required to support the analog network. As a result, beginning January 1, 2008, OnStar will only offer services, including OnStar Hands-Free Calling, through dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment.

Yeah I find the service pretty worthless. You can call 911 from your cell phone just as easily and you can get to them much quicker then having to talk to an OnStar rep and wait for them to connect to your local emergency services. Same with the hands free and other features.

This thread is pretty irrelevant considering the service is only available for the remaining 6 months of the year.

No, it was never cool. Standard cell phone has always been more useful then OnStar and cheaper.

If your cell works at the time of the crisis, sure but you dont have to worry about that with onstar, it can help you anytime, anywhere. Onstar has helped many people I know, if your cell is in a bad area, your screwed.

Depends on which cellular carrier you have and if your phone is dual band. The dual band phones will switch to analog and use the exact same towers that OnStar will use. All carriers offer dual mode phones (but you will find that a good amount of people have digital only as the cheap and free phones most people get no longer seem to include a feature all phones carried a few years ago). Plus with OnStar discontinuing analog service at the end of the year, your ability to get service in many areas will be gone. I also have a Iridium GPS phone that I throw in the trunk if I'm gonna be driving through the middle of nowhere (or camping in a remote area).

Onstar is a good feature to have in a car. My last car was a Buick which had onstar, it wasn't activated, though when a drunk driver ran a red light and slammed into the side of he car going 60mph, onstar came up and asked if everything was ok and called 911 for me. Ambulance and Police were there within 5 minutes after the accident. If you ever do have an accident, you're not always sure you'll be able to use your cell phone, I think onstar is a great safety feature in any vehicle.
