Thinkin About a 3.2 type-s purchase....

Hello all. I've been looking for a cl 3.2 type-s (6-speed) for awhile and found a nice 34k miles one for a asking price of 15.9k..Now the questions..

1. What are the known problems with these cars?

2.Performance...I also own a 06 GTO M6 with full bolt-ons and tuned with around 400hp to the wheels, hows this car going to compare to it?

3.MPG, hows this car do on gas mileage?

4.How reliable is this car? It's going to be my daily driver so I need something I can count on.

5.How do you all feel about the car if you own the same model I have my eye on..

6.I have a full Pedders suspension on the GTO...Is this car going to feel like a tug boat on the road compared to the GTO?

Thanks!

Thanks!

1. What are the known problems with these cars?
No known transmission problems with the manual transmission.

2.Performance...I also own a 06 GTO M6 with full bolt-ons and tuned with around 400hp to the wheels, hows this car going to compare to it?
Apples and oranges. 6MT CL-S puts down something like 218whp stock, so it'll feel really slow compared to your GTO. And it was designed as a luxury coupe (I think) so there's more of an emphasis on comfort rather than power/performance.

3.MPG, hows this car do on gas mileage?
It varies depending on driving style. I genereally average 23-24 mpg with with mostly highway driving (~70-80mph). When I was doing only city driving I was lucky if I got 17mpg. I've noticed an improvement on gas mileage with my mods (I/H/B-pipe).

4.How reliable is this car? It's going to be my daily driver so I need something I can count on.
It's fairly reliable. Again, the 6MT hasn't had any major issues with it. On occassion some people have had the ballast go out on one of the headlights, or a cv joint replaced, but doesn't happen often. A few people complain about cabin rattles, but I haven't really noticed any problem in my car. OH, one problem kind of a lot of people have had is the IMRC going out. IIRC it's pretty easy to replace, but I'm not sure, I got it done at Acura under warranty.

5.How do you all feel about the car if you own the same model I have my eye on..
I love my car, but whenever I see a 335 or some other newer model coupe, I kind of get the itch to move on to something newer. As of right now I don't really wanna get into paying a car loan, so I'm pretty satisfied with my CL-S.

6.I have a full Pedders suspension on the GTO...Is this car going to feel like a tug boat on the road compared to the GTO?
Umm, I'm not familiar with the Pedders suspension, but the CL-S supsension is pretty soft. It's a comfortable ride, and you will notice body roll if taking a turn fast. If you want you can always upgrade the suspension.

Thanks!
NP and good luck with whatever you end up buying

In regards to suspension, upgrading to coilovers (TEIN, KSport, etc.) or adjustable shocks (Koni Yellow or Tokico Illumina) and a good spring (H&R Sport or Eibach Sportline from 98-02 Accords) can greatly improve the stiffness and handling of the CL. Good tires and a rear sway bar will also further improve handling.

I don't need a race car...I just want something thats fun to drive and has decent power. It's also gotta look good and be reliable. The CL-S seems to fit the bill, just looking for info right from the source Thanks for the replies so far!

Well it definitely has decent power, its not FAST but its pretty quick for what it is and all 3 of my TL/CL's have been reliable, no problems.

1. What are the known problems with these cars?
None really, or at least that i know of.

2.Performance...I also own a 06 GTO M6 with full bolt-ons and tuned with around 400hp to the wheels, hows this car going to compare to it?
Its not

3.MPG, hows this car do on gas mileage?
Fairly well, well at least for a v6 - i average about half hwy half city and get around 21-22 mpg driving normally.

4.How reliable is this car? It's going to be my daily driver so I need something I can count on.
Mines been pretty reliable, the other day i went to start the car and no power, got a little scared... but it was just a loose battery terminal

5.How do you all feel about the car if you own the same model I have my eye on..
6spd with 34k for 16 grand seems pretty good - i also own a 6 speed, its a comfortable ride, it has the get up and go to pass most cars u might see on the road... it has an equal balance of comfort performance and economy --- at a good price to boot.. It would be hard for me to choose another car over the CLS, if i had to id probably pony up the extra couple bucks and get a g35 or a 330ci

6.I have a full Pedders suspension on the GTO...Is this car going to feel like a tug boat on the road compared to the GTO?
Not familiar with pedders - the stock suspension on the cls is a little stiffer than most cars, but not unbearable for an old man --- if u must, just upgrade the suspension to something stiffer

Thanks!

So far this one is sounding promising....Going to contact the guy about the CL-S today. Sounds like performance wise it's a battery powered go-cart next to the GTO but has plenty of grunt to not be boring and annoying to drive. I am happy with that.

Only other cars so far that I am considering is a caddy CTS and a v6 accord. The CL-S is still my fav so far though.

Keep em coming fellas, the more info and input the better!

A 6speed is rare .. as you traverse the board, you'll feel more and more proud you own one, that's a promise.

Pics of your GTO? I'm seriously considering one when I graduate college. Either that or a Genesis.

The damn CL-S was sold form underneath me...Grrrrr. But I'm still on the hunt for one, I really want one so imma be presistant with this one. Hard to find one around me the is low mileage and in good condition with the 6-speed...

Here are some pics of my GTO, it's not done yet and the suspension has not settled when these were taken so t sits a tad lower now.

And heres a vid of some action from my area...Im the first race in the vid (40mph-135mph)
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/7...1b0178b7fe.htm
Enjoy!

If anyone can find a nice low mile CL-S in tampa, FL link me to it PLEASE!..lol

Thanks!

If you decide on a GTO get at least an 05 or if you can an 06....avoid the 04's for sure. If got any questions on them feel free to ask me.

Damn, you guys get some low gas mileage. I'm averaging 27 mpg fairly easy.

You can't go wrong getting a CL-S six speed for a quick, comfortable and reliable daily driver.

BTW: nice GTO

I've had a TL and a CL, love both of them. The CLS is a pretty fast car. I enjoy it!

Don't be discouraged by the 60k miles on the CL's. Thats like 10k on most other cars. I have 64k on mine at it feels EXACTLY like the first day I bought it (except for the lowered suspension and wheels). You also will find most of them certified w/ 100k mile warranties on them so reliability shouldnt even be an issue for another 40k (shouldnt be an issue with honda/acura anyways). If you are considering a BMW, keep in mind that repairs for them are very expensive for parts and labor. And the Volvo, I hear they arn't reliable at all... Not even that sporty either.

P.s. Nice GTO
p.p.s. My CL-S6 is on the market... I'm looking for a smaller car that packs a punch. Theres NO street parking around my house and the CL is basically a 2 door limousine.

325 are slow... i've raced my buddy a few times, always walk on him. its a bmw, i love them, but their maintenance (after warranty is up) is very expensive. so the cl has a slight edge on power

of course bmw has better handling, rwd where as the cl is fwd and a boat.

the cl is a lot longer than the bmw, if u care. i park next to my friend all the time... its huge.

both are good cars, but imo if u want a reliable dd, get the cl. its cheap to maintain and comfortable.

What's local?

From the previous responses:
325i - forget it, the CL-S is better.
Accord V6 - forget it too, CL-S is much better.
G35 - very nice car, my wife has one. But only consider the 07 or 08, not the earlier ones.

If I'm not mistaken, the previous gen V6 6spd accords w/ 91+ octane weren't too far off performance-wise compared to the CL-S. Interior quality isn't horrible either. In my opinion, this car is still worth considering if you can't find a good deal on a low mileage cl-s.

I can see the future:

Day one: txpx brings home an innocent, virgin 03 CL-S.

Day not too long after: CL-S rollin on 18s dropped on coilovers, with sways, strut bar, cai, headers, axleback, pulley, and tint...at least that is what I would advise

Pretty tricked out Grand Am you've got there.

MT CL-S is going to be VERY reliable. Only real issue is going to be warped brake rotors, but you'll prob get a big brake kit. Maybe HIDs and navi/radio are the next high cost items that MAY fail. Timing belt/water pump every 6-7 years and you're good to go with basic maintenance. Motor mounts, fuel pump, ABS (make sure brake fluid has been changed every 2-3 years) are other very remote possibilities....

Performance? It's a nice comfy relaxed highway cruiser, but can't really take corners.

Since you're not in a hurry, I would just keep looking for a garaged car in the exact color you want from a PRIVATE owner with complete service records. High miles are not really a problem if it's been driven nicely. My 01 CL-S has almost 90k, and it feels and looks great. Don't go by low price; they're a good deal already at KBB trade-in value.

Lol...thanks for the comments on the GTO. Most of the mods cant be seen in pics

The only mods to the CL-S is going to be a drop in K&N, Tint, wheels, maybe a tune, and maybe a suspension to drop it a little and tighten it up and thats gonna be it a far as performance goes. When I wanna go fast I'll pull out the GTO lol. I see everyone keeps sayin dont worry about miles but I'm not gonna buy a car with 90k miles or anything like that on it, thats just me. Max for me is gonna be 40k with this car. I know they are out there and Im not ina rush so I'll just be patient Thanks for all the help so far guys

6MT CLS's are rare, w/Navi even moreso, under 40k mi is rarer still. I bought mine out of state with 7500 miles, now has 52k miles.
Upgrade the lightweight and tall shift knob.
Great cars. I love the reliability.

Longtime Acura coupe owner here- 88 Legend Coupe, 95 Legend Coupe, and 2 03 CLS MTs.

Well I found one that met all my criteria already but it got sold before I could get to it. I'll just keep lookin, dont care about navi, I'll be going aftermarket for that. I could settle for and auto since im not going to race the car, but I'd still prefere 6spd

Finding one with low mileage will be tough, but they are out there -

I found mine with 42k on ticker and still thought it was a little high (not for the year, but for me)

Good luck and you shoudl definately hold out for the 6 speed.

Yeah, atleast it appears like that, just check out the trans recall sub forum, a few are even on their fifth.

On the other hand, there is a member (I think 02cls) here who has 170k on his original trans.
