Are there 2 types of Timing???

I believe that there are 2 types of timing; Cam and Ignition. Is that corect?

Now if that is correct then what are the differences between the two, besides the ovbious, one's for cams and the other is for ignition.

Tnx

I think there are actually 3 types of timing.

Ignition (when spark plug sparks)
Intake (cam) - how long the intake valves stay open
Exhaust (cam) - how long the exhaust valves stay open.

on DOHC engines, the intake and exhaust are on different cams so they can be changed independently.

I'm not sure aobu tthe terminology 'cuz I'm not automotive engineer, but I think it is so.

Add to that fuel delivery timing. Also crank timing is we want to get picky.

The cam and crank timign are measured values of mechanical position. Ignition and fuel delivery timing controlled output values based on the measured positions of the crank and cams.

There are two types of timing, ignition timing (when the spark plugs fire) and valve timing (when the valves open and close). On DOHC valvetrains, the intake and exhaust valves have independent timing.
