Test 'Rode' a '97 Lotus Esprite V8 Twin Turbo....

Man, I was thinking that if I buy this car that I'd change the exhaust being the first thing done.

When you turn this thing on and rev it, damn!!! It sounds sooooooo nice! You can hear the turbos whizzing along when it goes up to the 7500RPM redline. It was yellow and perfect on the inside. I'm very close to putting up my M3 for this one.

Just a few stats on the car:

3.5L V8 Twin Turbo Engine
350BHP (At the wheels, not crank)
295lbs or torque
0-60 in 4.1 seconds

yea its a nice as hell car....but dont put your M3 for it...the turbo whine will probably get annoying. (Well an open exhuast would help if they had one...which i doubt)
My reasoning is itll always be in the shop...im gettin my info off the fact that lotus is a small company.

Too costly, yes. Too hot, yes. Very fast, yes. I want, yes. I'll get, yes.

The words of the primative age regarding something fast! I might give up my M3 for it. This car has 11,000 miles on it and going for a killer deal ($53k). Plus the guy is going to throw in the OZ Racing 3-piece wheels ($2500 option from factory).

Well, I just don't know if I'll be able to move to Cali if I get that car. I won't have a job there right away and would need to find a place to live. Dammit!

'97 Yellow Lotus Esprit V8 TT or California?

It's 350hp at the crank not at the wheels.. where did you hear it was at the wheels? check out this URL: http://www.autosite.com/new/datashts/engines/2611.asp
But yup that car is fast.. 12.7-13 secs for the 1/4 mile..are they gonna add a 6 speed and increase hp output to 400hp any time soon.. that car is getting old.. get the new Z06 with 405hp.. that should do 12.4 1/4 miiles...

Interesting. You think they have chips for them like the do for the Audi S4s? If I'd be able to buy a chip which adds 60+ HP and 100+ lbs/torque, that'd be great!

Yeesh..a a 60+ HP/100+ ftlb chip... if all it took was a chip to give it that, don't you think Lotus would just flash the computer that way???

And bhp means brake horsepower which is measured at the crank, so that car must have had upgrades..maybe the magic chip above

You can buy a chip for the Audi S4 for about $500-$700 which give you 70+hp and close to 100lbs of torque. But that also voids your cars warranty.

Everyone has a corvette. I see too many of them everyday. They have great performance, but don't want to drive something that the guy next to me at a street light has.

Only 100 Lotus Esprit cars are imported to the US per year. Compare that to the 400-500 Ferraris.

You bet! Get anywhere faster! People have told me that my M3 can't be a daily driver, I've been driving it for the last week straight and have no problems. Only thing on the Lotus is that the oil change is about $150 but hey, you gotta give up something for something.

Damaged, you are asking for trouble getting this car. If things start braking you wont even wonna know how much the bill is. The car comes with a 2 year warranty (unlimited miles, rust is 8 years).

The car costs $88,420 and has only 2 options (Customer Selected Paint and a Glass Roof) so it does sound like a steal which also sounds like there is a rat somewhere in the deal. Could the car have been through an accident? Did you drive the car? Does it feel like it is going straight?

This is one fast car though even stock. 13 flat for the 1/4 is better than a stock C5, even the new 2002 ones. The 350HP stock sounds an underestimate. The main prob with the Esprit is that is has been mainly unchanged for like 15 years now. The interior as well as, the exterior are showing the car's design age. Forget the ergonomics of our CLS or even your BMW inside. This is going to be less of a daily driver than your M3 has been up to now but it will be doable depending on your tolerance levels and traffic you have to deal with.

Actually also has one more option: 3-piece OZ Racing wheels.

The car for $53k is right around where it should be. I've talked to a good friend of mine who used to own a lotus and he told me to NOT get the 1997. Get 1998 and above since they changed the wing on the back to be more DTM type, changed the interior, changed the clutch to a racing clutch, changed a little bit of the ECU programming and some other little stuff. I think getting a 1998 for $60k might be the way to go...
