I use Purolator PureOne file ($6) + 5 Qrts of Mobil 1($19-$23) + Plus 25 cents for a washer and I do it myself... It would still cost less thant $30.

which is better, at the dealer or DIY?
I bring 5 quarts of mobil 1 to the dealer, the total at my acura dealer is $16 for labor, filter, washer, and tax...

OK, here is my two cents

If you plan to sell your car before 100K miles, and does not really care whats going to happen after 100K miles, you can go ahead and use regular oil with drain intervals as recommended in your owner's manual (yes, you can even go up to 7500 miles if you are driving highway).
But if you are a car enthusiast and always want the best for your car or you have a goal to run your engine above and beyond 200K miles, then paying little extra for premium protection is not a bad idea.

My drain intervals are 5-6K miles using Mobil 1 synthetic oil using Honda filter ( I know Honda filter sucks, but .......). I drive a mixture of highway and city, more like a city driving. If I don't drive much, I change oil at least every 6 month or 5-6K miles.

Did you ever think that there are tons of variables that could allow you to "spin 3 tires at a light"? Road conditions, road surface, ambient temperature, humidity, inflation pressure, just to name a few?

Yeah, we got same "real" HP gains by putting in some Mobil 1. Here, I'll prove it....watch me light 'em up for 2 blocks instead of just my usual 1 block
Same conditions, day in, day out, same vehicle, driven the same way for 6 months with dino, and then driven 6 months with synthetic.

Tell you what, you don't like synthetic, that's fine, deal with it..... I really doubt real sportscars would dump it in if you gained nothing. You're a neive piece of work Tom2......

Synthetic is better than Dino.
Poly-Urethane is better that rubber bushings
Roller cams are better than regular cams
Overhead cams are better than pushrods.

See the trend..... Technology tends to make things better.... Deal with it bucko....

5 qt jug of Mobil 1 is $20-22 at Costco.

What about the dual filter system Amsoil sells? Anyone try that thing?

Every 3K miles oil changes really are no longer needed.

Huh? What are you talking about? What is your point?

I never said I don't like synthetic. Nobody is arguing that synethis isn't better than dino oil. The question is if the benfits of synethic oil are worth the extra cost.

You have a reading comprehension problem. Of course technology tends to make things better... nobody is arguing with you.

My point is that the benefits of synthetic oil don't outweigh the greater costs.

Besides, you seemed to back off on the claim of a 3-5% increase in HP by simply using synthetic oil. I still say that's 100% bullshit.

That rocked. LOL. ok let's be nice. I use mobil 1 now and i have it changed every 4500-5000 miles. When i use Dino oil, i don't trust it past 3000 no matter what acura says. So if you really look at it it, i am spending the same ammount of money, and not dealing with the inconvenience of having dino oil changes near as often.

I change my Mobil 1 about every 5K miles. I drive my car like I just stole it so I think that 5K is a good amount. I'd do it more often but can't afford it ... I'm not sure abut all the#s having to do with it being better or not but I feel tons more comfortable getting on it with the synthetic. I'm of the "you get what you pay for" train of thought. I'm hoping that it works the same way when it comes to oils.

This amsoil seems pretty popular. I might try it next time thoughI woldn't feel comfortable keeping ANY oil in my motor for 25K miles or 1 year. maybe 10K and 6 months.

Personally, street engines NEED the synthetic. Stop and go traffic, as well as cold starts are brutal on an engine.

One final note though, whatever you use, changing your oil is really cheap insurance. I doubt the CL has a really cheap block!
Yeah, well I think Wires is on the right track and I agree with what he has said here. In Florida, the dealer recommends you change dino oil every 3000 miles and 7500 miles for synthetic.
