Synthetic Oil question - how many months before drain required?
I'm running with Mobil1. How many months (not miles) is recommended for synthetic.
Here's why - I'm draining the Mobil1 (7500 miles since last drain, March 04) because I want to stick to the OEM schedule (even though I'm using synthetic). I will drive about 3000 miles more on the new Mobil1 syn oil, until about mid December. At that point the car will sit in the garage and get limited use (maybe once or twice a month, weather permitting).
Will I need to drain again in the spring (Mar 05) seeing it sat for a few months.

Where is my super sauce?
If you're putting very low mileage on your car and storing it for winter you can go with 1 year oil changes (by the manual). Of course, if you drive it at all during the winter for short hops you'll be in the 'severe use' category and then should change the oil in six months regardless of mileage.
My mileage and use falls a bit short of the 'severe use' category. I change my oil every six months in fall and spring. In fact I'm due for an oil change this month.
I don't have the owner manual in front of me, but as I recall my intervals reflect what is said there.

In airplanes, where I would call all service severe, we change oil, synthetic or not religously every 50 hours of use. I say all of the service is severe, as it is quite regularly with the engine producing 75% of its rated power. Take that as to say think about driving your car all the time 75% floored. And upon takeoff, we develop 100% of the rated power, there is only a precious few minutes spent landing (power off) and taxiing, using about 30% power.
My point is, if the average speed is 120 knots (138 mph) in 50 hours we would cover about 7,000 miles. That should be the absolute minimum that you need to consider to change. And remember this is severe service.
