Surprising run w/ an IS300

I've raced an IS300 before which was auto but had intake and it was a fairly good race. However, tonight, some guy was challenging me on the hwy, so I gave it a go. It looked like he had a female passenger in the car, and that he was stick as well. He took off first and got a good jump on me starting at around 83mph, leaving me about 1/2 car behind. I finally caught up in the lower 6k rpm range (I wasn't looking at the speedo, I'm assuming around 95'ish). From that point on, I pulled on him like a freight train til 107'ish, where that time I was a length or 2 ahead, and we both gave up. He slowed way down and got off the next exit, so no thumbs up were exchanged. My car felt sorta sluggish during the run, so I did a few 80-100 sprints later on and it seemd much more peppy than during the race . Either way, it was a hell of a lot closer than I was expecting. Definitely a to the guy.

wow...i just raced an IS300 as well about an hour ago...i was on my way home on 580 freeway when i came up upon a silver IS300..lowered with some 18 or 19inch RacingHartM5s...i paced him for awhile causing me to miss my exit..so i was like what the heck i'll see if he'll try to take off on me...paced him for a good minute and was about to say forget and just exit and turn around as i sped up i see him downshift and starts pullin on me i was on SS cruisin at 4th gear goin about 60ish...when i saw his rear end of his car dip down i knew he was on the throttle i downed it to 3rd and imediately start closing in about 110 on 3rd gear i flew by him and shut downed at 130ish..he gave up.....i slowed down again and waited for him to get right next to my door around 70ish on 3rd gear ss..he punched it again, this time i waited a second and let him take off on me....i punched it passed him up around 90ish and pulled....it was probably an automatic though

Dem1K your car must pull with the headers on..nice kill.

they don't have to. if i'm not mistaken the same engine that was in the non twin turbo supra is in the IS300. this engine thats in it, the bottom end isn't built as strong as the twin turbo engines, making them two different engines. so realisically it's the same block and if you where to take apart the engine and re build it, it can be as fast as the supra since it is the same block. but it will cost a little bit more money in order to do that.

I dunno man...I've raced plenty of 'quick' cars and beat them, and this thing held it's own pretty damn well. Maybe it was the driver, who knows? I think stock vs. stock, our cars would have one hell of a time beating one.

Stock IS are not quick and you will beat them 90% of the time unless you screw up.

Now some of those modded ones are another story.

yea...the is300 block is used in some supras and also rx300s. This block is very popular for Toyota. Thats why turbo is300s mostly use custom applications of supra turbo kits.

The RX300 used a 3.0L V6, the IS300 and Supra used a 3.0L I6, two different engines.

The IS300 engine was the same as used in the NA Supra, SC300 and GS300. And although it shares the same mechanical dimensions as the Turbo Supra engine, they are different internally as far as materials and obviously CR.

oh wow, i told you that toyota loves that 3.0 engine. For some reason i always thought that the RX300 used the same engine, but I probaly assumed that since the rx300 custom turbo parts are usually from a supra kit. I wonder why the rx300 didnt use the I6? Is it cause the V6 probaly produces more tq or the v6 is just a better apllication for the body style?

Remember, the RX300 is normally FWD. Although there was an AWD option, the layout was for a FWD configuration; the engine sat transversely. The I6 was too long to sit across the vehicle. Since the V6 was shorter in length it was the clear pick.

This is true for all other FWD Lexus/Toyota vehicle including the ES300, V6 Solara/Camry. They all used the same basic V6 engine. The RWD vehicles, all in the Lexus group, used the I6; IS300, SC300 and GS300.

Makes sense. Whats the hp and tq differnce between the V6 and I6? Does the I6 tend to have more problems then the V6 or are they both good engines?

The HP depends on the application. I beleive the I6 was rated ebteen 215 and 225 depending on platform it was put into. The V6 was rated around 190 - 220 depending on years used and patform. I am not aware of any inherent issues with the I6 but there were some reported sludge issues in the V6 which cause oil starvation and susequent engine failure. They are rare and seem to only occur when the oil was not changed regularly.
