In 1963 I used to pay about .30 a gallon for Sunoco 105. Us kids used to complain about the high price. I guess everything is relative.

Think 50/50 mix is great idea for your supercharged CL!

I thought it was bad to mix different fuel ratings in the same tank?? Or is it that when you guys say 50/50 is something they pre-mix it for you at the gas station?? b/c in my mind, lets say that if you fill 1/2 take with 100 first and then the rest with 92, I would think that within the same take of gas, I would most likely to go through most of the 100 octane first because it's on the bottom?

I'm just wondering if some body can explain this. Thanx!!

If you mix an octane gas of 92 with 100 you will get an average octane of 96. When you pump a mid grade gas the pump actually pumps 2 octanes to make the mid grade. Mixes the lower octance 87* (1/2) with the higher octance 91* (1/2) and get 89* octane mid grade gas. * These are CA octane #'s.

So in effect you can cheat a little if the gas station is out of low grade octane gas you can pump the mid grade and JUST get high octane gas.

I thought that the race gas was leaded for some reason. If so, This would really screw up our converters.

if any of you guys in the nj or pa area want to know where the gas station is its exit 30 on rt80 go down the ramp and make left then go 1mile and the sunoco is on your right.just pull in a fill up 100octane sunoco race gas.4.29 a gallon so just mix it and try different percentages till you get the best performance

WHATEVER YOU DO, do not even THINK of going to the local airport, and getting a tank full of our 130 octane "low lead". That low lead reference means as applied to airplane engines, not car engines. Because air cooled engines expand and contract A LOT, they are put together with loose tolerances, maybe .007 to .008 thousanths of an inch, compared to about .001" for a car engine.

130 low lead contains about 5 times the amount of lead BEFORE we were forced to use unleaded fuels.

About two months ago, we had just lifted off, and I noticed a Lambo Countach getting his car filled with 130 low lead. If this guy keeps this up, I cant wait to see how much he paid for a valve job on two cylinder heads with 48 valves!

Just goes to prove that if you are rich, you are not necessarily smart. Lead in fuel is used to lubricare the valve stems and valve guides, if you were wondering. FYI.

In Perú, my dad used to fill his Toyota Corona with 84 octane leaded gas 20 years ago :-)

Yes, however attempts to blend in your fuel tank should be carefully planned. You should not allow the tank to become empty, and then add 50% of lower octane, followed by 50% of higher octane. The fuels may not completely mix immediately, especially if there is a density difference. You may get a slug of low octane that causes severe knock. You should refill when your tank is half full. In general the octane response will be linear for most hydrocarbon and oxygenated fuels eg 50:50 of 87 and 91 will give 89.

Attempts to mix leaded high octane to unleaded high octane to obtain higher octane are useless for most commercial gasolines. The lead response of the unleaded fuel does not overcome the dilution effect, thus 50:50 of 96 leaded and 91 unleaded will give 94. Some blends of oxygenated fuels with ordinary gasoline can result in undesirable increases in volatility due to volatile azeotropes, and some oxygenates can have negative lead responses. The octane requirement of some engines is determined by the need to avoid run-on, not to avoid knock.
