Sumitomo HTR+ review and pics

I installed my Sumitomo HTR+ last Friday. I bought the 215/50/17 from tirerack for $89 a piece. There are a few members on here with the 235/45/17 but from what I remember there were problems with the balancing of the tires due to the increased size...so I stuck with the OEM size.

As I received my car back from the tire installer a good 2 inches of fresh snow had just fallen on the ground (and still dumping). Time for some winter fun...

Compared to the OEM Michelins, these tires gripped much better in the compact ice and snow. I remember during acceleration the car would slide side-to-side, but not the case with the Sumitomos. I also noticed that during braking, the ABS wouldn't kick in as much, whereas on the Michelins, the ABS would go crazy with the slightest touch of the brake pedal.

The snow had melted pretty quickly the morning after, and I had to make a run up to Best Buy. During the hour drive (to-from) on the highway the tires were noticably quieter. Between 65-90mph the car was dead silent...all I heard was the wind whistling past my rear view mirrors and the moon roof. The car sat fairly stable on long highspeed curves and didn't have the wigginess of the OEM michelins.

Last night I did some aggressive (Steelers lost...I was )starts/stops and took some fairly sharp corners at high speeds. The Sumitomos performed flawlessly. I did manage to get the rear end lose a little, but I had hit a batch of salt on the road. The annoying tire squeal was no longer present either.

There is absolutely no comparison between the Sumis and the Miches. And for $89 a piece, it's a great value. If you live in an area where you need all season tires and performance is a must for you, I highly suggest these.

Apologize for the white crap on the tires. The city has been salting the roads pretty heavily in the past month.

Cool...I'm planning on getting the same tire...but in 235/40-18

Problem with 215/50-17 is that the rotational size is alot smaller than stocks.

Those look REALLY good dude.

The tread is aggressive, and it looks good with our rims too. $89/tire is A STEAL!!!

I will definitely look into getting some of those, next year.

For now, my car is garaged until June with the Toyos still on, and a decent amount of tread left.

I REALLY am going crazy not driving my CL, cuz i have to ride EVERYWHERE with my girl in her LandRover, and that thing is a SLUG!

All tires that come from the tirerack.com have those lines running down them.. My SO3's came like that....It washed off after a bath.

K-dawg, those meats are bitchin.... Say bye bye to my stock Michelins come summer time... I am slapping my aftermarkets on and strippping the OEM rim and wrapping with those Sumito's for next winter.

Keep up the quality upgrades..

I think you made up my mind. I was debating between the sumos and the yokos. But after reading this, I am going to get the sumos in 225/45/17.

Now where did you go to get it installed (at any garage or a tirerack referral)? And how much was the installation?

TIA!

K-dawg got them installed at a speed shop that does alot of rims and tire combo packages... He went to them because the last time he went a Garage on the corner they scratched his rims on his intergra.. So he decided to go to a well known place... i think he paid 65 bucks for everything.. they disguarded his front tires, replaced the stems, etc.

is there a reason you're going with 225/45/17...seems the tire rotation/mile would be much less.

Anyway, like Smitty said I went to a tuner shop in PIttsburgh. Paid $72 but I had a bad experience with Pep Boys. Scratched the f out of my Enkeis on my teggy.

I was going to go to one of those TireRack recommended places but they closed at weird times.

It might be a good idea to check and make sure that the people installing your tires know your are very picky about any scratches and ask if a there might be a problem with whatever wheels you are using (factory, etc).

IMO, it can't hurt to ask the place to be very careful and be sure ask about any policy regarding "scratching."

YMMV

You can end up at a well-traveled speed shop and find a newbie -- or careless/lazy soon to be ex-employee -- that doesn't bother putting enough grease on the tire machine(s) used to install and remove the shop’s tires -- I speak from experience. I got "burned" at a place that did tons of work... The scratches are fixed (nothing like a workout), but...

I was running on 215/45/17 before so I thought I should upgrade to a bigger tire, 225/45/17. FWIW, my rims are 17x7.

What is this rotation/mile being less talk?

if you go to tirerack.com and check out each tire and the specifics they will give you a rotation/mile. It's a number that tells you how many times the tire goes around per one mile.

you want the closest to the OEM tire to get same odo and speedo reading.

I have been looking into these as well... Seems like a great tire for the $$$$. There are several other threads about them on here. However, I will be going witht the 235/45/17
