Strange Sound Under Heavy Cornering

While out for a very spirited drive with friends earlier today, I was unfortunate enough to hear my car make a new sound.

A few times, when cornering heavily (but not wildly), you hear and feel a "thunk" sound coming from the front of the car.

The sound was sort of like a cross between a heavy downshift of the transmission and hitting a gap in the pavement at high speed.

I don't think it is the tranny, since rpms didn't change, nor did I have any problems shifting the rest of the day. Also, the handling characteristics of the car didn't seem to be affected in any way.

Not sure what's going on, but i figured someone out there had had a similar issue.

I'm glad you asked this...

I had the same shit happen to me this Saturday when I was in the Santa Cruz mountains.

My buddy was leading with his M3 and we weren't going that fast.

Did you notice VSA light come on at any point??? I did once or twice but not cosistent.

I thought my transmission was slipping...it was a "thug" sound.

Kind of freaky because I was taking some turns with a little speed but nothing too wild and whatever that was had the potential to make me crash.

My girlfriend's synopsis was that it happened when the ground wasn't level and we were making turns at over 45 mph. I don't agree.

I don't think it makes sense that VSA would be kicking in unless the tires lost traction but I didn't feel that ever happen.

I would have to agree with the other Guy's, But is your car Lowered? You might have a bad spring or its not sitting right in the strut, What kind of springs you have in it ? If its lowered that Is.

I haven't had it lowered. Everything suspension-wise is stock.

As for VSA, mine was kicking from time to time, but it really didn't seem to be linked to the sound I was hearing.

I am not sure either with the VSA but I did catch it on once or twice when it happened.

I really can't stand to think it is a cv-joint or upper control bushings.

More repairs....

My CL isn't lowered yet...so had nothing to do with that.
