steering wheel swap question

i want to upgrade to a '03 steering wheel. i know the wheel itself is a direct swap but do i need to change the airbag or anything? i searched but cant find anything on the airbag question. im thinking about pulling the trigger on one so any info would help.

01-02 is single stage, 03 is dual stage. You could do it by rigging something up, but do you really want to rig up the airbag?

It's only the steering wheel your replacing? Then any 1 for 01-03 CL/TL/MDX will bolt up fine. Your going to reuse your airbag.

You can swap the wheel and keep your original airbag and srs module, messing with the dual stage could get tricky

just go with an s2k or rsx wheel with rsx bag. plug and play. they range anywhere from $125 - $250 used on CRSX, for the whole setup.

Those are dual stage bags, its not plug and play.

this was talked about on the TL side too, unfortunately for us single stagers, the only wheel/bag combo that will work is from one of the s2k's but then you'll be stuck with a Honda emblem

afaik you would want to check out the threads about swapping the s2k airbag in (s2k is single, 03 cl is dual). just need to measure the resistance of the single stage bag and emulate that via resistors.

the only thing is that a dual stage airbag would only come out at one speed, which would be no different than your stock single stage.

actually i take that back:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...3&postcount=19

you would only need to wire in a single stage (presumably the stronger one) and you are set

the 03 ECU needs to be tricked into running the second stage, but i don't see why the 01 ECU and 03 bag wouldn't work running a single stage only

Well if your steering wheel is trashed you can still replace that. It's separate from the airbag. There was a guy on eBay that sold a sticker you could put over the airbag to make it look like the 03. IDK if it's still available. That was a long time ago.

Not all S2ks were single stage, IIRC it was only the AP1s.

Not sure if its a typo, but the 03 doesnt need to be tricked into running the dual stage bag, dual stage is what is on the 03s. A dual stage bag on a single stage SRS computer will throw an SRS light, and IIRC when the SRS light is on, the bag wont deploy.

yeah, i haven't had much sleep. acctg MT in 2 hrs as well.

you're right on both accounts. (oh i think i meant that when an 03 ECU runs a single stage bag, the ECU must be tricked into thinking that there's a second stage available, which is done via resistors)

a dual stage bag has a good chance of working if the SRS light doesn't show up, which it didn't for those guys on h-t. you just have to hook it up to the right stage on the airbag, and the wires on the reel. 1 stage can be unplugged on the bag itself, so there's no loose wires.

I've got a spare 03 steering wheel btw with under 40k miles. looks brand new if you're looking for one. When I bought my 2nd. CL it had a marble steering wheel installed, and dude had stock parts he gave me.

That's what I'm saying, don't bother. Keep your airbag, get a new wheel, problem solved. Swapping an airbag that your car doesn't support for an emblem seems kind of silly is all. I had to change airbags when I went from a 97 to an 01 CL-S steering wheel, and I wanted the airbag with the emblem too until I found out that they were 2 stage and I said screw it, and just upgraded to a newer airbag that matches my 01 wheel perfect after a little paint
