Steering wheel swap...

well, bit the bullet and changed it out since the car is undriveable...

Its thinner I have to say and feels much better.

S2000 wheel with RSX airbag.
Cruise came with wheel so I had to rewire it (not hard at all)(an RSX button would plug right in)
Radio buttons from Odyssey (plugged right in however had to modify the cover on the side to make it work. Not only so, it stands away about 1/2 inch. Doesn't bother me)
Airbag has dents in Acura symbol so I'm looking for a deployed airbag to rip the emblem off of it and glue it onto this one. Dont worry, I have some really good shit for it. (bought this bag for about $100 cheaper than what they are going for on ebay right now)
Other things I ordered was the bracket that bolts to the steering wheel to mount the airbag and the screws for an RSX.

This is the same wheel as in the RSX but I found this one for pretty much free (had to pick it up)

Either way, there are no SRS lights and everything went together like butter.

Sorry, pics are dark but you can see it none the less...

The RSX wheel is much smaller than the CL wheel I think. Do you like that?

when I sized them up, it was only about 3/4 to 1 inch smaller all the way around. I'll check again tomorrow with exact details.
Thinner also up top but right before it gets to the top spokes, its gets thicker for grip. Thats nice I have to admit.

I bought it because I like the 3 spoke design just like the the TRD wheel in my supra, my friends Subi Legacy, and some other car I drove in recently.

i like the s2k wheel so much better than the original. feels so much sportier than the stock wheel. good idea on using the rsx bag to get the "A" symbol. on the radio controls i was able to sand the sides down and get it closer to the side so it looks more like it actually belongs. nice work nonetheless

Its still in the CL but on the floor rather than where the wheel is supposed to be. The wheel's leather is worn. Not a shiny worn but rather that the top part started to come off and it kinda feels like suede in certain spots while normal in others. This was my main driving reason to change it.

The airbag on the other hand is in great condition. I THINK it might have a scratch or 2 but i'm not sure.

LOL its not that hard. Actually, I saw it done some time ago and decided that since my wheel was worn, I'll just swap the whole thing. I was either going to go with the MDX wheel woodgrain and have it painted like ronjon but then it came down to me sitting in my friends new widebody S2000 (which is one of 5 here in the US. What I mean is that there were only a few kits made [20 I think total] and 5 of those 20 were imported to the US), grabbing hold the wheel and seeing that it was just like the TRD wheel in my Supra. I was sold. Pieced together the wheel and viola.

I found all the needed info here on AZ. Not a hard mod to do I have to admit.

Nope. Can see everything like before...

Now as promised, I sized up the wheels again. Difference is:

3/4 of an inch smaller all the way around and thinner in spots.
BTW, this is the AP2 s2k wheel which doesn't have the perforated leather. But since I got the wheel for free, I'm not complaining.

A very cool mod. I like putting my hand between the spokes at the bottom of the wheel so a 3 spoke is not right for me but props on your car!

Wheel looks excellent on the CL. It flows very well. I was thinking about eventually doing what Ron Jon did on his wheel, it costs $500 though.

Regarding the airbag swap, I read some where that it's not a direct swap. BTW artbran, mad props to you for pulling off this awesome mod.

Very nice, I always liked the go kart feel of the RSX wheel. Thumb rests and 3 spokes is much nicer than the wood wheel option IMO.

I remember why the '03 air bag won't fit an older CL. The '03 has dual stage air bags and the older ones don't, so the wiring would be different.

I read that too but then read a thread saying that some one used the RSX bag and everything was good... So there it is.

As for the SRS system, Looks to me that everything is ok. The idiot light is not on

From what I understand, I think all RSX's had dual stage airbags. So just throwing this together is nothing for the 2003.

just found this:
http://www.automallusa.net/2001/acura/cl/reviews.html
http://www.automallusa.net/2002/acura/cl/reviews.html

Both say that the 01 and 02 had dual stage?

Then when you go to TL's they say that 1999 - 2001 had single stage and 2002 - 2003 had dual...

I'm confused...

Wait. Part numbers are not the same:

2003: 06770-S0K-A90Z
2002: 06770-SY8-A90Z
2001: 06770-SY8-A90Z

TL
2003: 06770-S0K-A90Z
2002: 06770-S0K-A90Z
2001: 06770-SY8-A90Z
2000: 06770-SY8-A90Z
1999: 06770-SY8-A90Z

So looks like the 1999-2001 TL was single stage as was the 2001-2002 CL.
2002-2003 TL and the 2003 CL were dual stage...

I was going to buy the airbag from Artbran but it can't be done without some trouble. Can anyone confirm that no one has successfully completed this swap before on an 01' CLS.

I was refering to the member that wanted to swap his '01 air bag for the '03 air bag on the original CL wheel.

True. But I think that if its re-pinned, then it should work. I'll have my friend check the resistance on red wires from the 03 CL bag and the 01-2. If they are the same or very very close, then it will work. Just will need to re-pin the wires into the old socket. Or, if that doesnt work, then you can always cut and solder.

I'm on hold with the local Honda body shop. Told them that I'm looking for the harness only from a deployed bag. I want to see if its possible to re-pin it.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but the new wheel looks great, art. I like how you used the RSX bag to keep the acura logo

hey artbran-

Did you need any special tools to remove the original steering wheel? I am thinking about buying a blackwood/leather wheel, but I don't know if I will need a gear puller or anything special to do the job of removing my old wheel.

Thanks Ryan. I was thinking about using the S2000 bag but I didnt like the huge circle that they have going around the H. Not only so, everywhere you look, its an Acura. Not only so, since the RSX had a dual stage bag, this made everything much much easier

Not really. The only thing that you will need is a torx bit to get the bag off and a 14mm ratchet. Pulling the wheel is easy too. Some will tell you to get a puller but this is nonsense. What you can do is hug the top part of the wheel and the bottom, brace your feet against the ground an pull back. Just make sure that you "wiggle" the wheel left to right while pulling it before you hug it. Hit it with your hands if you want to also.

Just make sure that your wheels are straight and so is the wheel before you pull it off.

yeah just call me. I'll be getting the CLS6 parts car tomorrow and will be delivering it to my warehouse right away. Then I'll deliver my CL there to have the tranny swapped.

Either way, let me know when you wanna check it out.

FYI i don't think AP1 controls will work well (there's no cancel button) but AP2 and RSX controls have all 3 buttons

Just out of curiousity, what's the difference between the s2000 wheel and the RSX wheel? Also, wouldn't all the original controls for cruise/audio work with the new wheel? I never even thought about replacing the wheel until i saw yours and now i'm itching. I think the three spoke looks a ton better than the original wheel.
