Stealing Xenon HID Headlights
Stealing Xenon HID Headlights
I live in Brooklyn, NY. Has anyone discovered a product to protect the theft of my CL's headlights. For the past two years, thieves have been poaching them like crazy. It's a big problem, in NYC; I understand in Jersey, too. Acura corporate said they havn't come up with a solution as of yet. Before someone swipes my lights, please let me know if anything is available, for anti-headlight theft!
P.S. I have a 2001 CL.

What a lot of people have done is added a shock sensor to the factory alarm. I did this as well, and it's a cheap, quick way to offer some protection.
My sensor is so sensative that a slight knock on the car sets the alarm off. It doesn't guarantee that the lights won't get stolen, but it helps... b/c the thief can and probably will go to another car that doesn't have the sensor and steal theirs.
Do a search on Shock Sensor and you should get a bunch of results....

Well you didn't here it from me, but the proper way to steal HIDs is to smash the bumper off with a downward motion. This will leave all the screws under the the headlight exposed and easily to reach. Next, opent eh hood and undo the screws on top. Do not bother unscrwing the lights, just cut the wires. Customers will want the lights with the housings.
No one really wants our housings. This is more for Maximas due to the fact that the headlights were interchangable between the models aht di not have HID's standard.

Hey Juniorbean, what brand of shock sensor are you using?
The one I currently have, some radio shack cheapy, isn't sensitive enough and isn't doing the job.

I know for a fact that it's not DEI... I just can't remember who it is
Shock sensors on the headlight housings won't deter 95% of thefts. It takes a crowbar and 30 seconds flat to peel back the bumper and hood. Car alarms going off are so common in Brooklyn that no one pays attention to it anyway.
I caught some ass taking off the side view mirrors in my old Town Car during broad daylight on a very busy street. People stared as they walked by but that's about it.

I had an Acura Legend stolen in Jersey. Something about black guys near Newark being crazy about Acuras. They stole my 88 Legend back in 94 and crashed into a police car. I was buried with paper-work for weeks. Now I have a TL and don't bother going to NJ even though got tons of in laws there. I'd hate to see those theives go at a Mass registered car.
Of course Acura hasn't found a solution yet. It's cheaper to sell more HID's than to research and develop a security clip, which would go for 30 bucks. In other words, Acura makes more money on the HID's, so the more stolen, the more money they make.
