Springs=Tirewear??

I just came back from my local performance shop...I was about to make my decision on springs when the head mechanic told me that even with the alignment, people with lowered cars go through tires like crazy....even if you rotate every 3 months.

So now I am weighing the sacrifice of looks/handling vs. rougher ride and extra expenses for tires and shocks.

Tires are about $700, shocks for another $500... plus 400 for the springs installed. that is a crazy expense for having your car lowered...

How many of you with lowered rides have experienced tire wear?

Did you ask him to explain this to you? I'm not a mechanic but that sounds like bullshit to me.

Although some tire wear may happen the idea of lowered cars going thru tires every three months sounds highly suspect to me.I own two cars both lowered neither vehicle has a problem with tire wear.It sounds to me like he is describing cars that have been lowered excessively without camber correction kits or he just does not know what he is talking about.Jens

you lower your car, you create negative camber....
you install a camber kit and you're back to factory specs...no tire wear.

And our car does not even require the correction kit with comptech springs...

any kind of lowering does produce negative camber, but the drop provided by comptech springs is not so low that it will greatly increase camber wear on the tires (er, you still get camber wear but it's slight).

maybe he was trying to get you to buy a camber kit from him, but he didn't pitch it well to you.

Are there even camber kits available for the CL-S?

Yeah, but they aren't needed with the Comptech springs. If you go lower than the Comptechs, then you might need a set. All you need if you go with a drop that's less than about 1.75" is an alignment.

even with my comptech springs - the local acura dealer here told me i'm getting abnormal wear on the sides of my stock tires because of the springs... thinking I might try the camber kit when i spring for new tires.

Most people haven't experienced this, I hope I don't. Did you get an alignment after installing the springs?

Or perhaps people with performance springs drive more aggressively and that accounts for the increased tire wear. I know that's why I go through tires every 6 - 8 months.
