Spoiler Install - Dealer Ripoff??

Went to my local Acura dealer last Friday to have spoiler installed. I had paid for the spoiler when I purchased the vehicle on 2/07/01, but they had to order it. When I called to make the appointment, I made sure to inform the service writer, that my spoiler was already paid for & that they had been holding it in the parts dept. When I picked up the car, the bill included $600 for a spoiler!! I brought it to the cashier's attention that I had already paid for the spoiler, but she was unable to figure it out until the Acura sales manager showed up with a copy of my bill of sale. She redid her thing in the computer & came up with $118 for the install. That seemed a little high to me, so I went to the sales manager & reminded him that he told me that it would only take 1/2 hour to install the spoiler. (For $118 plus a 120 mile round trip on lousy roads, I would have installed it myself!). The sales manager chats with the service manager & I overhear "this should take 45 minutes, max!" So, I figure that I am going to be billed for 1 hour shop rate & I can live with that. Well, the cashier does her thing again & comes up with $88, which is still too high in my opinion. Back to the sales manager & he & the service guy get together again. It seems that 2 hours is the minimum that they can charge for a spoiler install, but he had cut the shop rate to $44 an hour(I think that is his Pontiac rate, as they are a Pontiac dealer, also). The sales manager was pissed & he had the sales dept. pay for half of my installation, which was nice of him. What really pissed me off was that the service guy NEVER once, tried to explain the bill to me, nor did he ever even speak to me after the car was ready. He even acted pissed (I guess because he didn't get to rip me off!)
Maybe Wayne or Jens can offer some explanation. Is the spoiler install flat rated at 2.0 hours and does Acura make the service departments charge flat rate?? In any event, I'll never return to this service department again, unless I'm forced to with a warranty problem!

why wasn't installation included in what you paid for the car?

FUCK THAT,
If you paid for it when you negotiated the car, it should have been included with the car, no installation charges. If you pay that I have some land in Florida for you. Sorry, that just makes me pissed off to hear that.

Currently I think I get paid 1 hour flat rate to install a spoiler on a car not equipped with navigation.I get paid 1.1 hours for a navigation car as the navigation gear in the trunk must be removed so the new springs can be installed. These times I believe are based on the Acura suggested install times.Jens

Thanks Jens, As to the other comments, I appreciate your input, but several of the accessories were offered to me at dealer cost, at the time of the car purchase, NOT negotiated in the selling price of the car. Also, I was seriously thinking of installing the spoiler myself, as the dealer is 60 miles away over some rough roads! Thanks, but not interested in your florida property!

Jens,

I am afraiad, that when I got my CLS with the spoiler the dealer either cheaped out and did not installed the beefed Springs/torsson rods, or the torson rods have not been adjusted to better lift the added weight of the spoiler.

When I open the trunk it barely open 1". I can not notice if it did open or not from far.... should I get it back to be adjusted.

Thanks.

I like that. It takes an extra .1 hours (6 mins) to rework the navigation gear.

As far as the original question. The dealer's entire handling on this is pretty low rent. If they didn't give you a price originally for the spoiler (which I am sure they did) they should have made it very clear that this was the installed price or not the installed price. You should have asked but they should have made this clear. Low rent pontiac dealer. Find another place to service the car and be glad it only cost $88 to realize this.

Mike S, Yeah, your right on with 'low rent' classification of this dealer. Just to clarify, I didn't get stuck with the $88 - the Sales Manager had the sales department of the dealership pick up half the tab. A nice gesture on his part, but the Service Dept. is REAL Low Rent!! Fortunately, I can do most of my own service (I already bought a Helm Manual), but if I need warranty work, I'm going to have to go to Ohio or Kentucky. Oh well, the CL-S is worth it!!

I had my spoiler installed when I purchased my car and it barely raises when I press the truck release. How could I tell if my torison bar or springs have been replaced with the ones that support the spoiler?

The trunk only opens about 6 inches even with the right torsion bars. You don't want it to come flying open. It also reacts quite heavily to weight on the trunk like it being really wet or having any snow on it.

That is correct regarding the trunk torsion springs. They only open the trunk a small amount. The reason they swap springs is to keep the trunk lid from bopping you in the head when the car is on a hill with the trunk open.Jens

The same question has been on my mind since I bought the car.

When I press the trunk release on my car, all I hear is a “CLICK” and the trunk lid only rises about a QUARTER INCH.
I’ve kind of gotten used to it, but have always wondered.
