So, I guess I'm not going to be installing my new trunk springs.

First off, thanks to the community for having an abundance of information out on this topic. I have the trunk-falling-on-my-freaking-head problem because of a spoiler, and and ordered new, stiffer springs from acuraautomotiveparts.com. I thought that perhaps they would come with the spring installer/remover, but they didn't. So I contacted ahmotor.com per another thread's recommendation, expecting to pay $17.88 shipped (or something like that), but was told that the tool is now $40 shipped. Way too much for a dinky tool that will be used for 10 minutes and then never again. I was told that a year ago the tool was cheaper, but for some reason Honda increased the price. Anyway, so I called my local Acura dealer and they are going to put in the new springs for $38, perish the thought.

Anyway, there's some random information for you all

why not just buy the tool, install them yourself. then resell the tool for $20? Would cost less in the long run.

check at autozone if they have that tool your looking for. They have a borrow a tool program and hopefully you'll find the spring compressor tool you need.

Play around with it some and you should be able to improvise something.

I changed the trunk springs in my '96 Accord without the "special tool". Used a large cresent wrench backwards; caught the end of the spring in the hole in the handle and pulled the other end.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'll check on that Autozone possibility. I have borrowed from them before.

Call a local body shop and ask them how much to install. THey probably have the tool and will only take them a few minutes.

I had the same falling trunk, but I had the dealer move my spring to the next notch. That did the trick, and the dealer did not charge me. It did not take them more than 5 minutes. I suggest you check around for a dealer that will do it for less $$$$.

If this were a case of a few hundred bucks, there's no question I'd buy the tool and just do it myself, but there is no reason to split hairs over $40. I want these new springs installed 100% and don't really want to try workarounds like realigning the stock springs because I have been dealing with this problem a while and want it fixed once and for all! I'm just flabbergasted that the problem is so widespread.

I don't have stock springs. The springs are much heavier than the originals. They came with the spoiler kit that I installed (borrowed dealer's spring tool), but the springs still went limp. I had the dealer move the springs to the next notch over a year ago which did the trick. Just a thought.

Thanks for the input. I'll make sure that the new springs are installed on the stiffer setting to make sure that the problem is fixed.
