Smokey tagged me with a stationary laser!! 135$!!

I just got nailed for speeding on Sunday. The cops had an unmarked car on the side of the road with the trunk open (to look like an accident) and two cop cars parked in front of it. The cops had a stationary laser set-up supposedly and they jumped out from behind the car and waved me over. The stupid thing was that I was just going to church with my wife and wasn't even trying to go fast or in a hurry. I was hit for going 76 in a 55. Like the song says, "I can't drive 55" Seriously, the gears just don't work out, the car is comfy at 70-75 I swear!!

Oh well, another trip to the courthouse...

Yup.

Where was this exactly?

Btw, I've seen them using a helicopter down near the I95, Rt.32 interchange (it's a ways south of Baltimore but it's part of my daily commute).

Keep an eye on the sky as well as the radar detector.

Neither ESCORT nor Valentine Research will help one on one against laser. Your only hope is that you get a reflection from a shot meant for someone else.
Unfortunately the price for laser speed guns have come way down. It used to be that only the best funded police departments had them, but today at $599 per unit more and more police department are buying them.

Know how you feel... the cops here in Austin like to park their motorcycles where you can't see them and then get off their bikes and using battery powered laser guns peek around pillars of bridges where they are almost completely invisible. Best defense is looking for people in front of you braking!! V1 doesn't let me know until it's too late and I speak from experience, unfortunately.

Yeah, MD cops are serious about speeding. That's the only thing I see them do here. A dude got jumped outside my job in the early AM a while back and the cops took an hour to come after the call, and that is in the city.

I think it's better to deal drugs in Baltimore than it is to speed!

Besides that, I didn't even enjoy the speeding... to me that didn't even count!
You want to bust me for speeding at least let me do it on purpose, heh!

Still I don't think laser is going to become very popular since it can't be used while moving and it can't be used from inside the patrol car (windshield/glass). If you can't us it from sitting inside the patrol car, you have to lean out the window or open the door and that will eliminate some (not a lot though) but some spots and some adverse weather conditions.

They have saved me on many occasions. The police seem to be in different locations during my commute lately, and the advanced warning gave me time to slow down each time.

Of course they are going to say that. If I ticketed 10 radar detectors in a day, I would think that 10 speeders with radar detectors got caught. 100% don't work. I wouldn't know anything about the 9 dozen or so radar detectors users that found me out and slowed down and made it safely through. Maybe he meant 100% of the speeders that speed thru my speed trap with radar detectors get caught; they don't work.

I wouldnt give up my radar detector for anything.. w/o a doubt the best investment in my car... has saved me soo many times. Ive never gotten a ticket with one. Two without, my dad just got a K40 in his 911 and that thing is very nice. Built right into the dash so u cant see anything. Detectors built into the front headlights and rear brakelights. And, the front license plate frame, the little black peice is a radar jammer!! Has to be the coolest thing ive seen.

My V1 hasn't let me down yet and actually did a wonderful save just the other day from behind radar. I have used BELL and COBRA before, I must say that they did almost nothing other than make me panraniod that cops were everywhere, The V1 is just much much more accurate, ignore the X bands as you fly by, and perk up when those K and Ka bands go flashing. Just love it!

When I get a radar detector, it is going to be a V1 -- it is just too good.

However, I did find out that the new instant on lasers (used by the moto-cops and others) have such a tight spot beam, that you shouldn't count on avoiding instant-on laser speed guns. They aim for the plate, and unless you've got a jammer, the V1 will be clueless.

Come on Eric, my V1 warns me of laser all the time. Everytime I get hit with laser, it sounds off, so it is far from clueless. Did I or would I have time to slow down? Perhaps, perhaps not. Ok, most likely not. But I have beat laser before with my V1 giving me some early warning, so it is possible at least.

I've got a V1. Luckily, the speed traps in my area are still all radar. We have road hazard signs that use laser to monitor traffic, but they're pointed straight down, so I don't get a warning for them until I'm right underneath the sign. I am always warned way in advance for radar, though. One of the neighborhood cops seems to turn his radar gun power down real low to keep from being detected by most people (I only get four lights when he's pointed right at me), but the V1 still picks up his signal far enough in advance.

Well, the person who was showing me his V1, was talking to a cop about the ticket he got from the laser. They did some tests, and the V1 could NOT pickup the laser when aimed at the plate.

The cop and mr V1 went on down to PCH and the cop let him watch as he burned down speeders.

The cop actually laughed when he saw the V1 -- I asked about the cop's reaction. The cop said something to the effect, that these things are useless with the new guns.

So, stay smug! I'm not talking about some older model.

Also, being in a mini-police state, the cops around here may have newer and more toys than your cops (I don't know for sure).

You all forgot about laser jammers, in particular the Blinder, which works! Confirmed several times w/ the local PD, very cool guys, once in a controlled setting and once during an actual trap they had setup. All times, the jammer jammed.

But I too, before the jammer, was able to beat a laser shot w/ the V1. Actually saved me a few times so it is possible to do.

I would like to mount a second jamming unit on the back of the car but, aside from under the bumper which isn't an ideal location, I can't find a good, good looking place for them. $325 is definitely worth the price for one save of the fine and the insurance increase.

Not any more -- the price has come way down, and they realize that they can have "more fun" with them.

Actually, mr V1, said he wanted to buy a laser jammer. He was concerned about legality, but I said that only the "RF" part of the spectrum was controlled.

I've heard great things about them. They do only work up to a point.

Let me give you one scenario, that wont help you.

Take a smart cop -- they are sneaky and smart cops out there. The guy who got mr V1 was careful to aim for the plate (no waving the beam around), and only firing at when the plate was dead center.

At some point, the "jammer" doesn't have enough power to "overcome" the laser.

They had an article on this, in if someone wants to get nasty -- I'll fixate on this and find the math that proves that a jammer only works up to a certain range (given reasonable power output -- I'm not talking about chemical lasers that vaporize the cop -- OK)

For would be So Cal laser testers -- I believe the laser ticket and cop were in Redondo Beach -- so, if someone wants to race around down there with their V1 -- let me know. I will probably be getting a V1 as my next addition (along with stainless brake lines).

Using laser I have stopped many people who have detectors. I don't know if any of them were V1 detectors. If anyone in my area has a V1, let me know. I would like to set up some road tests, my laser against a V1. It would be interesting to find out its effectiveness in a controlled setting.

Yep, as of right now they're legal. Laser is regulated by the FDA not the FCC which bans radar jammers.

I'd be impressed w/ the cop that's able to hit the front plate (lacking on my car, CT doesn't require it) every time he shoots. Those things are big and clunky and from what I've seen the scopes are 1x and don't zoom, just used for sighting.

The transponder, two in the case on the Blinder, sits in between the headlights and the plate (one on both sides) giving complete coverage. This also gives better detection ability and more jamming ability. You just need to keep them clean.

And yes, the laser might burn through the jam as you get closer but at that point you should have slowed down. I was able to jam the local PD completely 3 outta 4 times. The 4th he got a reflection about 20 feet out. Real close.

Cops usually only use laser 500-1000 feet out. In CT, a ticket can only be given if the shot is less than 1000 feet, no more. The tests we did were well under this range and the jammer worked. The nice thing about this is it has an on/off switch which I mounted in that open spot to the left of the steering wheel. Once I get to the speed limit, I turn the jammer off so the cop can get a reading. The local cop who tested this w/ me said, "Screw it! If they're legal, don't shut it off. Jam all the way past him!!" Really cool cops, eh?

Possession and using lasers: legal. Interfering with police operations: maybe not so legal, depends.

How would i find out if MD has laws on how far away a cop has to be to site you w/laser? On my ticket it says they took the reading at 1,850 feet. That's a good way away.
