Sl500
Got a chance to play with an SL500 (MErcedes) on the freeway. Kinda neat, but the same out come, everytime he floored it, I did too. He kept falling behind. He finally turned off, he looked pissed. I guess he was upset that my $31K car was faster than his $90K car. Oh yeah, I have the s/c & headers.
Damn nice car though, much nicer than my TL-S of course .

from what I know...the sl500 does the 60 dash in mid to low 6 second range and the 1/4 mile in the mid to low 14's...
Some guys w/ CL-S with just headers run in the mid to low 14's....and check out the guys with the S/C...they're runnin high 13s! How can you say an SL500 will slaughter a CL-S with S/C? Sure it has lots of power, but you forget its lugs a 4,000+ lb ass along with it.

Do you have any idea what the SL500's run? If ya did you wouldn't be making that statement.

I've personally taken an SL500 to 70 and had him by about a 3/4's length. And I know he was on it WOT cuz he's the one who prompted for the race at a red light. They're nice as hell but no AMG.

Or maybe he wasn't trying?
Hey Ronnie, how's it going? Haven't seen you post for awhile . I took the car up to about 120 mph, there was moderate traffic.

Was this the new model? or the previous? Either way, those cars are VERY heavy, and SL500 isnt exactly special in the acceleration category. This is believable, even to the most hardened skeptic.

I don't know how heavy it was, the sl500 is the 2 door Roadster. Are you sure that car weighs 4k lbs?
I have raced a 2004, but I think this was the 2003; however, the results were the same.

Wow! Your right, I just looked up the car at the Mercedes site, 4k lbs!
Dem1K, I think, with headers the CL-S auto can do about 14.3 to 14.5 seconds in the 1/4 mile. It would be a very close race .

If he has the S/C, he's running mid-13's. The SL has NO CHANCE IN HELL!!!

Both c&d and R&t gave the sl500 0-60 of 6.1. The new clk500 with the same power weighing 3730 lbs, does 0-60 in 5.2 and the 1/4 in 13.7@104.5 mph. That shows you how much that weight affects the sl500s times. There could be other factors im not aware of like gearing, etc. R&T also gave the e500 sedan a 0-60 of 5.9 and the 1/4 at 14.4.

I drove the older style SL500 and wasnt too impressed with its acceleration; I felt that my Maxima launched much harder off the line. (I have no doubt it would catch 'n pass me on the hwy.)
I sat in a new SL500 this past April and...........................I almost became an automotive version of a squatter. I didnt want to get out. That was the sweetest car I've sat in since the time I sat in a 98 SC400. Like the SC, it's as though the car was built around your body. It felt more like a well tailored suit than a car.

I'm bored and browsing so I'll respond to this thread based on experience...
Not sure how fast a S/C CLS is, but the SL500 current gen or last should def. lose to a blown CLS...
Now I've read some stories here about beating SL500s...I can't dispute that but I will say that I've beaten EVERY TLS and CLS I've raced in my 04 E500 off the line or moving...funniest race was with a white CLS with MD tags and debadged racing on 495 by Tyson's. We were already doing like 95 or so and I could not believe he wanted to go. By the looks of the tail lights I knew it was 01/02 so 100% sure it was auto so I knew I was gonna slaughter him ( we all know about your 4th gear woes).
Even with H/I/E the CLS auto was no match on the highway to a 540i (NovawhiteTypeS can testify to this).
I would love to ride or drive a blown CLS to feel how fast it really is. I was dissapointed to read that the blown folks were only running high 13s. I would expect low 13s for that money spent. My RS6 felt like a dog too in stock form then the CHIP really made that thing into a BEAST. Can the S/C CLS change something in the ECU to make more boost or something?

not sure how to respond to that. sound like your $$ flow has put you a little out of our league.
as for upping the boost in a blown cl-s, scalbert has built and is starting to market an intercooler for the cl-s. that coupled w/ the high boost pulley netted 380 whp on his 6 speed.
