I've missed this thread until just now and I'll read the past posts in it in a bit - first my answer to the question on the first page:

It's too bad you made the mistake of promising him a new car - kids rarely learn the value of a car when they start off with something nice - they won't appreciate a nice vehicle if they have never been in a used car (and judging by the sweet rides you own, he probably has never been in a used car).

My first car was an '89 Grand Prix SE my parents handed down to me. I took good care of it and because I did, a couple years later my dad let me drive his (then) brand new '97 Z28 just about as much as I wanted. I was lucky enough to never get in an accident or get a ticket in it, but looking back on what I did in that car, I'm very thankful I never got a ticket or in an accident.

Honestly, a boy under 18 really cannot handle the responsibility of a performance vehicle (even a CL-S) even if you're as blessed as I was while driving the Camaro.

That combined with the lesson in appreciation and care you learn from starting out with an old, used car are two life lessons every boy needs to learn, IMHO.

But you said you promised him this car or whatever, so get him the 6speed - his jealous friends won't be able to make fun of him for driving an automatic, and he then can get the comptech supercharger for his car just like your NSX without worry if his auto tranny will fry.

Correct about the demand, but show me Mercedes having the transmission problems that our great CL's are having. By the way jackass, go sit in a Mercedes and show me the same part used in a Dodge that MB uses? Please show me one car that MB builds that does. personally i dont think you people have really answered his question. ok he gots money, his son worked hard, through jobs and school. i mean bet or no bet if i was a father i'd give him a nice car, just being proud of him. maybe not a 30 thousand car (maybe if i was rich) but how about a toyota celica, or somethign around that power range. ok we got we dont want to put his son in a ferrari, or something really fast. i mean i see 16 to 18 year olds in mustangs, & camaros every day! maybe a matrix, camry, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Lexus IS 300, Volvo S40, Volvo S60. i know theres alot more just im poping them from the top of my head. you people need to answer the question not try to create a new one!

Look at the thread about it. The CL and one other car (cant remember) are down significantly. Mercedes doesnt see drops in sales. I still believe Acura to be too conservative. They need to come out with something new and hot, look at Nissan and Infiniti.

If you're comparing Mercedes and Acura head to head, you're talking about the C class. Sorry, the C sucks and is not up to Mercedes historical standards. That is, you're right about Mercedes being robust in general, but not if you're talking about one that competes in the same price range as the Acura. I'm only going by what several people in the business have told me, including a friend who owns a Porche shop.
