Short Whirr noise in '03

I just noticed a noise the other day that I cannot identify.

I sounds like a short (about 1/2 second) whirr of a motor and seems to be eminating from somewhere near the front passenger corner of the interior.

It occurs within a second or so after I roll the car forward the first time during a trip.

I was thinking that it might be the right side mirror coming back up after reverse, but the mirror seems to be up already when the sound occurs. The mirror movement itself is quiet.

The sound occurs after backing out of my driveway and then going forward - which makes me think it's the mirror again.

The sound is so short it makes it hard to localize - it could be the passenger airbag, side mirror or something in the engine compartment.

I've heard it several times now, both with and without a passenger in the other seat.

The car works great. No funny lights. The side mirror functions fine.

I suspect this is something normal that I just have not noticed before. Any thoughts? Mirror? Airbag engaging?

Correct... it's actually the ABS self-test. It does it at 5 and 15mph.

In the FAQ is says that the ABS sound is near the driver side - this sounds like its near the passenger. But I bet your guys are right - I'm probably hearing the sound at 5 mph.

Muchas Gracias!

YUP, my 6-Speed makes the same “whirring” sound that my Auto made.
I’m pretty sure it’s the same sound that you’re talking about.
