Short run with 02' Celica GT
I was leaving work and another co-worker is next to me in his 02 Toyota Celica GT. I just got this car about 2 months ago so he was like nice car and obliged and said the same back. Then he says it's a big car and it's probably slow. I told him it was ok and he just nods and looks at the light.
We take off and by the time he was shifting to 2nd I was just hitting 5000 RPM (VTEC) all I could see was his head and car disappear quick and that's the last I saw of him. I cut it off after I hit 2nd. He finally caught up and just put his head down.
Sorry it's just short and sweet. But it was classic. I don't think he hit second too well.
BTW - I have the SS and he had 5-speed

ha ha ha! Nice kill! When I had my Prelude and it was getting new tires I walked to the Toyota dealership and testdrove the Celica GTS (my 'lude and the GTS were both auto). I hated the Celica. It didn't feel nearly as nice as the Prelude in handling or speed. Granted I was partial. After the test drive the dealer looked all cocky and asked what I thought. I said that it was slower than my current car, a Honda Prelude and the color drained from his face. At least he didn't try and pressure me after that.
Good kill. The celicas are original looking but not so fast.

You should beat him. Gate shift if you can.
Times on the CL-S auto vs. the GTS manual are about a 0.3s (0-60) off, advantage CL-S. Stoplight to stoplight won't be cake but you will get him.
Good luck. The manual vs. Auto makes me nervous...like I said, make sure that it is more than just a jump off the line. If he is a good driver then you might have a problem if you are just going 1/4 down the road but if you can get a longer drag and get up to 100mph in 3-4rd gear you got him.

no torque. i had an injen intake and a jardine cat back exhuast on mine and it still was slow until 6000rpm in second. then it was quick up to 110mph. but by then who ever you were racing is already too far ahead to even think about catching up.
one thing, the 00'-01' are quicker then the 02' and up.
toyota had to pull back the fuel cutoff from 8400 rpm back to 7800rpm. that extra rpm was crucial to getting that car motivated. to many people were breaking/bending valve rocker followers like me......
by the way i still have my bra and a bolt up trailer hitch for that
celica. if anyone in the south bay area has a friend with a celica 00' an up $75.00 for both.

My car isn't an auto, but from expierience, I've tried shifting various auto cars, and it seems like it keeps the rpms higher, but it really doesn't pull as hard.

On CLS.. Gateshifting is good and bad..
Good: you will keep the first gear frrn shifting early (not at the redline). In SS or D5 it will shift early.
Bad: There is risk to hit the rev limiter.. D3 is better shifter at redline.

Cellies are fun cars, not fast by any stretch of the imagination, but fun. I'm pretty much here just researching, b/c I want to buy a 98-99 2.3 CL to replace my 87 Celica GT (LoL, quite the replacement too ) Honestly, I love the CL, but this celly is unlike any other. It isn't fast, I haven't modded it except for painting the black bottom part bodycolour (red), but this car has SOUL. I honestly have no idea how I'll part with it. It's a piece of junk, but it's MY piece of junk, it's my first car ever, the car I learned to drive stick on, and the car I first made out in. If I had the garage space, I'd retire and keep it, because I can't get any resale value out of it. The new celly seems like such a chick car though, if I got another celly it would be another 4th gen like mine, only one that isn't as rusty. If mine had no rust, I wouldn't think twice before blowing a huge wad of cash on mods, but the body is going, and it's not gonna be there for much longer.
Despite what most people would assume, it WILL be missed.
