Shift Gate

I have heard talk and have looked into having a billet shift plate made. But nothing has happened, probably due to cost consideration. But out of curiosity I took it off last night, which was quite easy.

Upon inspection I noticed further that it would require some good drawings and a decent CNC machine to recreate it. But I did get to thinking.

The base of the shift knob, the shifter rod, the door knobs, etc. are just plated pieces. Why not just get the stock piece chrome plated, it shouldn't cost more than about $25.

While at the dealer this morning I inquired about purchasing a plate (just in case it looks like crap) to get plated and try. Unfortunately it is not a separate part, even though there are just four clips holding it. You have to purchase the entire base which is about $55.

Do I just try it and if it does look good I am out just the plating fee. Or if it looks bad I will be out the plating fee and a new shifter assembly just to get the gate??

I think I will try it though, it seems like it would be nice. Any thoughts??

go for it.... I'd be interested to see it. It'll probably look good. Although I don't think my anal-retentive self would ever do it because it would be so susceptible to finger prints.

i think the stock piece is plastic, thus meaning it can't be chromed

Actually in most areas there are plating places. Heck, there is even one that is mobile (although they are really into Gold Plating, argghhh...).

Just look in the yellow pages for plating services.

Untrue. Look at shower peices, many plumbing parts are plastic chrome plated...

Hahahaha, knew that would get your attention.

Actually, Steve, its not mine, though I wish it was. That TL belongs to Nighthawk Black on the TL board.

If I can find another, better picture, it will explain how he did it, hold on a few...

Okay well perhaps I was wrong, I thought he got it imported from Japan, because Honda Inspires have chrome shift gates just like that straight from the factory AND NighthawkBlack is doing an Inspire conversion on his TL.

The one hitch is that their shiftgate is backwards in relation to ours. And its not symmetrical so you can't just flip it upside down either.

So I guess he did as you've suggested, and got it chrome plated or chrome dipped.

Here's the page I got it from.

Good luck.
