Shell Gas, a better gas?

Shell Introduces New Gasolines Specially Formulated for Better Mileage
No. 1 Selling Gasoline in America Launches New Formulation
For Better Mileage and a Clean Engine

HOUSTON, June 30, 2003 - Shell Oil Products US and Motiva Enterprises LLC today introduced new gasolines that are specially formulated to improve fuel economy by reducing friction in the engine. According to tests Shell conducted using standard EPA procedures, the new gasolines can improve fuel economy over gasolines at minimum detergency requirements. The new Shell formulation, which is offered in all three grades - regular, plus and premium - can add up to 125 miles per year for a customer driving 12,500 miles per year.
The launch builds on the Shell tradition of providing motorists with quality fuels and represents the second new gasoline in a series of fuel offerings that will provide motorists with increased value and enhanced quality. Additionally, the new Shell formulation further supports the two companies' commitment to build the Shell brand in the United States.

"While our existing offering gives motorists the benefit of a clean engine, our new gasolines have been specially formulated to improve fuel economy," said Russell Caplan, vice president of retail for Shell Oil Products US. "Shell has been providing American motorists with quality fuels and lubricants for nearly 100 years and our new gasoline builds on that with a formulation that can give better mileage, a clean engine and the peace of mind they expect from a quality brand."

Prior to developing the new fuel, Shell conducted extensive consumer research, which revealed that drivers value the time and money saved as a result of improved fuel economy. The new formulation reduces friction between moving parts inside an engine, such as pistons and rings, so they slide more easily inside cylinders. This helps the engine run more efficiently and use less fuel. In addition, the new Shell formulation has significantly more detergent than gasolines at minimum EPA detergency requirements to help protect against the build-up of harmful carbon deposits inside the engine. A clean engine not only performs better, but also produces fewer emissions.

"Shell and Motiva are dedicated to giving customers the best value for their money, so whichever grade they choose - regular, plus or premium unleaded - their engine will benefit from better mileage starting with the very first tank," continued Caplan. "From the Shell MasterCard from Citibank - which gives cardholders one of the best rebates available in the oil industry - to convenient locations, a consistent shopping experience and gasolines specially formulated to give better mileage, the Shell brand offers customers more value for their money."

In conjunction with today's introduction of the new fuel, Shell will kick-off a $25 million communications campaign that is centered around the message - "Get better mileage."

The new fuel is available at Shell stations nationwide. For more information on the new Shell Gasoline, please log onto www.shellus.com or www.localshell.com.

That's a big 0.01% so for every 100 miles, you get an extra 0.01 mile. In their commercial, it looks as if you would get a lot more than that.

sounds intresting, especially that you can get Shell Master card that gives you 5% rebate on shell gas and every other purchase. I have Exxon Mobil car which only gives 3%. The only problem there are not too many shell stations that are on my way, and its not worse making extra trip to get shell gas.

It is 1% or for each 100 miles you gain 1 mile more for each 10,000 you gain 100 miles.

Instead of 30 MPG you get 30.33 MPG.

I am currently running some tanks of Shell through my Accord to test this 'new' gas (also since it is now the cheapest in the area). Need to go through 4 or 5 tanks before I draw any conclusions but so far so good after the first tankful. Here is some recent mileage data:
31.8 (2/27/03)
31.7 (3/14/03)
29.0 (4/13/03)
31.2 (5/1/03)
25.6 (5/30/03, all city)
31.5 (6/14/03)
32.7 (6/26/03)
34.1 (7/13/03, moved, have a better commute)
35.1 (7/20/03) <-- Shell

BlueCLS6; Interesting data set... But can you compare before and after if your commute changed? seems like you need a new data set for Shell and Not Shell

That's the problem... I actually didn't realize that until I wrote that post! Looks like I get 3-4mpg better on a daily basis, cool! Oh and to add to the worthless data, I also changed back to my stock exhaust on that last tank, which is also going to skew my results... In any case, I will run some more tanks of Shell and then switch back to 76 to compare... good call.

I don't think Shell's gas is that great. I never get as many miles with a tank of Shell as I do with Chevron. I tested that and Texaco and BP, Chevron always gives me better gas mileage....about 360 miles per tank.

The variation in MPG could be due to chance alone. Seems like a good hedge for a marketing campaign.

Dump some Techron in your Shell gas filled tank and you should have the cleanest engine ever.

Went through another tank of gas, so I ammended my previous list:
31.8 (2/27/03) - 76
31.7 (3/14/03) - 76
29.0 (4/13/03) - 76
31.2 (5/1/03) - Chevron
25.6 (5/30/03, all city) - 76
31.5 (6/14/03) - 76
32.7 (6/26/03) - Chevron
34.1 (7/13/03, moved, have a better commute) - 76
35.1 (7/20/03) <-- Shell
35.5 (8/02/03) <-- Shell

Still won't know for a few months when I switch back to 76 or Chevron and go through some more tanks but still looks good.

p.s. I love that Accord... it's 13 years old, has almost 200k miles and can still manage consistent 35mpg ! It is even kinda quick... er maybe I just haven't driven the CL in a while, because everytime I get in it I do this

It's true..

Shell (the very seldom times I haves used it) does indeed give you more mileage out of a tank, but i've noticed my CL doesn't like it that much (pings and does all sorts of nasty stuff).

Basically I stick to Exxon, or Mobile. No Shell, Chevron (and by nature of relationship Texaco either) for me..

You could conduct a t-test once you've compiled your data in a spreadsheet. That should give you some indication as to whether chance or the gas itself was involved in improving your mileage. Still, since there are many other factors at play, I doubt that you will get a definitive answer.

Some have stated preferences. But why BP Amoco or Mobil or Exxon or Shell? They all seem the same to me.

With the car taht we are driving, gas milage should not really be a major concern.
