seat warmer? ... seat failure

so i was dropping my buddy off at home the other night and he's like... dude ur seat isn't heating fully. I replied ur prolly just imagining that or something.

sure enough only the left side of the passenger seat is heating up!!! bullox

so i read about the 3$ fix with the wire u just soldier in place but I am a bit worried i may pull the seat back and find no fryed wire under there... but i guess i have no choice

if only half the seat heats up then likely the fray is at the mid way point in the seat so i'm hoping for the best. i may just tackle it tonight we'll see. i do have a hoist and an auto shop at my disposal so i shouldn't really have any excuses...

my dlr was 250$ plus tax for the bottom seat heater...

i cannot believe most of the prices they shoot out. it's mind boggling...

i dont like soldiering but shit i just may have to with a price that exuberant.

anyone else need to tackle this issue??

if you don't have any blown fuses I would take the seat apart to take a look. It should not be difficult to repair if only a wire got toasted.
you just got to pull apart a bunch of things to get to the wires.

Have a similar issue, only the driver seat heater bottom works on high. The dealer quoted 400+ to replace the elements. I have seen write ups on here, but have been to lazy to search for em, and looks pretty bitchin of a job to tackle. Any links would be helpful.

Did you pull the seat apart yet ?
You need to see if it's a single or multi strand wire and what gauge it is.
No sense of buying wire till you see what wire your looking at or like nersh said you could just waste your time.

tru but if/when i take it apart i cannot drive the car afterwards with the seat out out and connections open. so then i need another ride to get the wire then..

i watched the DIY video the only part that worries me is the 11 connectors under the seat that must be disconnected..

are they all situated in such a way that u cannot mix them up?? or should i get different colored markes and mark each ??

actually i think the irony lands on me. i'm the one with the passenger side out when clearly barely anyone sits in that seat and yet somehow it fails..... bummer.

ah well i'm kinda looking forward to seeing the guts of the seat. it'll be an enlightening experience. it's going down this weekend for sure.. i think friday i'll just go for it after i'm done class.

Only the bottom of my drivers seat heats up anymore, and it takes absolutely forever to get hot. Usually 10-15 minutes to get fully heated, so by the time I'm getting to wherever i'm going it usually starts getting nice and warm.

so when i pull my seat apart I'm not going to know what wire to use right??

anyone know?

cause then i'll have to make a trip to get some wire and then that'll require me taking my car or someone elses to get that.??

and i'd like to just do it and get it over with.

so i ripped apart the seat yesterday, when taking the seat out i found 4$ too. seat isn't as heavy as i thought (from what i've read). the metal rings that hold the seat together are a PITA tho i must say when reinstalling the seat, that's the only time consuming part.

the culprit was a wire that looked like it was stretched thin while on full heat.. These wires are THIN to begin with so i cut out a 2 inch section and replaced it with a 4 inch piece. the connections i soldiered together and the put shrink wrap over to secure/protect any exposed metal/wire.

then i put the seat back in the car and hook it up, hooked battery back up and tested it first. and it worked!.

put her back together and it seems to be working as it was so i'm happy. saved some $ too for sure.

so after that went so well i decided to take out the drivers seat to clean everything up cause it's a 2 min job literally. and then i found 3 $ . and car is cleaner than ever.

You should see a burn mark on the heating element where the break is.

Also you do know that only the bottom of the passenger side heats up right? Just incase if you removed the passenger seat.

yea with mine there was a burn mark but the wire was NOT burnt through or severed. the burn mark was 1.5 obvious inches and if u looked damn closely u could jusssst tell the wire was narrower in the burnt area than the rest. even the color was the same. so i cut out about 3 inches added in a 5 inch or so wire which was just one gauge above the one i was replacing and it was really far back so i had a lot of clips to re-do..

That's not a factory seat heater element. I just did all seats in my 03 TL (Even added rear seat heaters) and purchased all heating elements except for the drivers from Acura. They are tan in color and most def had no lue color what so ever. That may be a universal heating element and looks VERY close to the Dorman brand universal seat heater elements I installed for my rear seats.

If that is an aftermarket seat heater that was added in, couldn't that be blowing fuses or causing electrical problems, at least for the passenger seat?

From what I read (on these forums)/understood, the CL cannot take two seats on high with both bottom and back heaters...

I'm just a noob, throwing ideas in the wind...

Depends...but yes, it could be. The only way to determine this is by simply disconnecting the element (bottom and back elements are wired parallel) and seeing if the fuse doesn't blow. Also, it's a royal PIA to ensure after installing seat heater elements that the wiring harness doesn't get caught or binded in the power seat track/metal bracketry. This is also pretty easy. Simply monitor the fuse while sliding the seat forwards and backwards and/or moving the harness by hand to see if the harness I'd dead shorting against any metal. It will more than likely be one of those two problems.

BTW, what's the amperage draw on the elements when on low and high?

passenger side back does not heat up due to sensors located in the seat to determine if a passenger is properly seated. The newer TLs have full seat heat and seeing how the seats are similar, it would not be a stretch to install one in a CL passenger side..
