Scheduled Maintenance - Can I believe it?

I'm having a hard time believing the maintenance schedule for the 03 CL-S. I've always changed my oil/filter every 3K and know the benefit of changing this often (just traded in an MR2 with 160K on it).

I read that Acura recommends keeping the original oil in until 7500 miles. Should I?

Acura states every 7500 for oil and 15000 for filter. This sounds like a long time before changing. Should I stick with the Acura plan or stick with my 3K plan.

What do you guys (and gals) think?

Since I got my '03 CL-S 6-sp, I've changed the oil every 3750 miles with transmission oil changes every 15,000. I've been doing this same routine for my '92 Accord EX 5-sp, and to this day since I drove it off the lot in '92, it's still going strong at 240,000 miles. Frequent oil changes = engine longevity.

If it helps you, I too sold my 86' MR-2 when I got my CL-S in March 2000. The MR-2 had 186,000 miles on it and only had the oil changed with Mobil 1 every 10,000 miles. As soon as the warranty runs out the CL-S it too goes to 10,000 mile oil & filter changes. The last valve adjustment check was done on the MR-2 at 180,000 miles and the inside of the cam covers was clean enough to eat off of!

Feedback is much appreciated. Can't wait to fire up that engine in the spring. I'm tempted every day to bring it out of storage but all it takes is one drive on the roads I travel (sand/salt and big holes) and the temptation goes away!

Regards

I would go with the manual. I changed mine at 7,500 the first two times, then went to Mobil 1 and change that at 10,000 miles. My last car (an 88 Beretta) was traded in at 350,000 miles and it used reg. oil every 7,500. If you drive your car hard and in tough conditions then change at 3,750. Honda claims that the original oil in a new car has special additives that help the motor break in better, I see no reason to not believe them. YMMV

Filter is important. I change my filter every 3750, oil every 7500. With a better filter (not honda), I would go 5000/10000.

Stejus, where in MA are you located?

I change my oil every 4000 miles, give or take a few, but I drive the car hard on long distances but more importantly I only drive 3-4 miles a day to work, which falls under the driven in 'tough conditions' category.

My first oil change was at 4200 miles. From there I switched to Mobil1. Once the case was out I switched to Redline and I change every 10k miles. I also change the filter (Mobil1 filter) every 10k....

I'm currently at 28k on the car... so I've done about 4 or 5 oil changes total. I just recently went to the 8-10k interval.... so I'll only do about 3 oil changes this year....

With my Prelude I did the service every 7500 miles even though the dealership said in MA driving conditions I should do it every 3750. They wanted the money is what I think. Acura says every 7500 in the manual so that is what I intend to do. Admittedly, my first service is getting done around 5500 miles but I plan to do it every 7500 miles after this.

Ferizzo,

Thanks for the info.

I'm in Douglas, how about yourself? Maybe you can help my identify a top notch Tinting shop in the MA/RI area. I want to tint my windows and use someone that knows what their doing.

Stejus,

I'm in Quincy (not too sure where Douglas is). I, and a few others here and on the Audi forums, got my Tint done at Tint King in Billerica.

Give them a call at 978-670-2927. I paid $200 for my windows and its garanteed for the life of the car.

I get the oil/filter changed every 5000km or 3000 miles. Better to be safe than sorry, especially that an oil change is $28.99 at the dealer.

jesus...10k mile oil changes?

I changed my breakin oil after 3,750 miles @ the dealer and replaced it with dyno oil every 3,750 miles after that. I did this until I reached 15k miles and switched to full synthetics. I now plan on doing 7,500 miles until my 100k mile warranty wears out. After that then MAYBE I'll do the 10k mile oil change interval...but not without an oversized oil filter!

After 16 years of trouble free driving excitement, I finally traded it in.
