shitty driver. if he lost his breaks he should have been downshifting much more aggressively than that. it sounds like the guy in the passenger seat might have been an instructor??

Engine braking would have done very little. The guy couldn't have done anything besides brace himself. Even a pro would have crashed....

Looked like he was going to fast for the turn. He turned the wheel and the car didn't respond. the front wheels just slid. Try hitting the brakes and turning the steering wheel in the rain. you will just continue to go straight.

his brakes broke...lol....he was in the brake zone before the turn. it's hard to say withouth knowing what track that was but apparently EITHER the brakes on that viper are insane or it's a high speed turn.

I dont have the vid on my computer, but saw it a few months ago. I will watch it again when I get back in town on a quick connection. It really depends what kind of tires and brakes the guy is running on the viper to determine if he was trying to brake real late. My friends Z06 with Goodyear slicks and PF 03 race pads enables him to brake REAL late. I was really impressed how hard I was pushed into the harnesses.,

i turned the treble all the way down and listened at high volume...from what i can tell, the brakes were totally shot, either they faded into nothing, or they just totally failed...the tone of the engine wasn't coming down fast at all, even in the dirt just before hitting the tires...i dunno if the driver was experienced enough or not to react any sooner to try and save the car
If you look again, not only did he lift the throttle, but he hit the inside of the turn too early because he knew that he had lost the brakes. The person next to him also went for the shifter twice before they hit. He steered into the turn and it just kept on going. Had the brakes been working, the engine would have slowed as well, it didn't even burp. That was quite nasty, they are lucky.

it appears to have been a driver's school, hence the instructor in the passenger seat. luckily, insurance will probably cover for him.

Money for the car AND money for any injuries.
HELL, just the car alone is worth what 60-70 K depending on the year and state of modifications.
If this was a training class does the driver just walk away with ZERO liability here ???

here's what happens when you engine brake a viper too fast...apparently it stops you quick....but not very gracefully

shawn & scooter,
okay i wasn't guessing ... here's a bit more details so as to eliminate further quesitons.
1. These "driver's schools" are covered by the national club association that provides the instructors.
2. The instructor should always be in the car with you on the track. I have been stickered off at almost every event, which is against the rules.
3. The only passing that is allowed is when you are "waved by" and in only certain zones which are always straightaways and never corners.
4. If you get into an accident, your insurance will cover it, since you were not racing. You only sign away liability of the track. The only caveat to this is if your policy specifically states that driver's schools are not covered. In which case I would recommend finding a new insurance company.
All and all, it is very safe, and very exciting. I do it as often as possible. If you do it more than once a summer, you should get race tires and brakes. Small investment, not worth beating up your daily driver tires & brakes.
