scalbert and anybody else who knows about this kind of crap -- ECU harness question..

Hey, scalbert. I've got a question for you regarding ECU harness stuff. AccordTypeR from V6P said I should ask you.

I'm looking to build a harness myself for the V-AFC II unit.

I've got the ECU port covered, since I found a used ECU for cheap online, but I need to find the harness that plugs into the ECU. I was wondering if you knew where I could find those.

I could buy a new OEM harness and cut off the ones I need, but that's at least 90 dollars, not to mention a big waste of money since I only need a small part of it. And I haven't been able to locate any junker TL or CL. Do you know if the 6th gen. Accord harness would fit the TL/CL ECU?

Once I get those harness plugs, then I can solder the wires and splice the V-AFC II pigtail into it.

I've looked into the Frog harness already, but it's been impossible to get in touch with the retailers, and I don't feel like giving someone my money with whom I can't even get in touch with. So in anger and desperation, I decided to build my own harness.

If you could give me any advice at all, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. Clear out your PM box!!

The problem with building you own harness from scratch is obtaining the parts and having the correct tools. You can't purchase the plugs and socket in one or two peice quantities. The only option is to try and get a sample order from AMP/Tyco. Even then you have another hurdle.

The pins used require a special type of crimping tool. Without this you are likely to butcher the pins and never get them to seat properly. The tool alone is about $100.

The other option is to get a harness from FROG or others. That is not a problem to obtain as I have two harnesses here ready for the E-Manage.

The other option would be to obtain a factory harness and solder on to the leads which would work. I just don't know where you are going to find the right harness and it would not be PnP at that point. Also, cracking open the stock ECU (albeit a trashed on) and extracting the socket base is not easy. It is board mounted with literally hundreds of pins soldered to the board.

Man, I just got up to crappy weather and a sore back, and that's all you can tell me?

Thanks a lot for the information, scal. I guess this one I'm not going to do myself.
Where did you get your Frog harness from? It's been next to impossible to get in touch with ARD Performance or LoCash Racing. And how much did you pay?

Thanks again!

Since I am supplying harnesses with the E-Manage/Intercooler system I had to source the connectors. But in the small quantities it was not going to be cost effective and it turned out that I could get the items needed through FROG, per my specification, at a lower price and with less hassle.

As such I am essentially a distributor for them now.

With that said, it still takes a day or two for me to hear back from then on questions I have.

Part #s, 600 minimum, get 'em from Scalbert. But here's the info.

Just to chime in a bit...

You really should think about getting your stuff through Scalbert.

The Tyco/Amp parts are available but they want 600 part minimums on each connector.

You also need 0.070 and 0.040 pins and as Scalbert mentioned -- the crimp tool.

You can probably get a couple of samples of each connector (depends on the phase of the moon), but if you want to go any further you'll need three trade references and unless someone is thinking about building more that 600 of something, see Scalbert's post again.

Here is the parts info for reference:

179686-6 104 pin --> ECU connector (takes A - D) ("Mating plug")

179681-6 32 pin (Connector "A")
179679-6 25 pin (Connector "B")
179680-6 31 pin (Connector "C")
179678-6 16 pin (Connector "D")

The parts can be "sampled", but are considered "Made to Order"

If you want to grab a couple, you might be able to pull it off, but you'd need to rent or buy the tool (back to square one). If you know someone who works with "MULTILOCK" connectors, you might be able to borrow it.

The Tyco catalog is #65839 Revised 12/98.

Eric -- Thanks for the info, and I was actually looking at the PIN diagrams when I read your post. I got 'em off V6P. But I realize that this is way beyond my knowledge level and will probably end up getting it from scalbert.

Scalbert -- Let me know how much you want for it, and how you want to do it. I was wondering if I could send you the V-AFC II pigtail and you could solder it into the harness when you're building it? Let me know how you want to do it. Thanks!
