I’m more of an OEM over aftermarket suspension kinda guy but my brother had a set of Teins on his 02 TL and I was very impressed by the ride quality on them. These should work great!

I hear ya. I'm keeping both so I can change back to OEM. I'm trying to acquire some low mileage used front struts to replace the aftermarket cheapos.

I want to get the Tein's and see if I can make the car handle more like a modern car for nice drives.

Today I decided to drive the car to work since it was nice and I'm still learning the car and understanding what it needs. Well.... 10min from my house (interesting since i've driven it longer) the check engine light came on. I have a feeling it's an emission code since it was having issues with the emissions system when i got it but I thought I had resolved all of that with the purge valve replacement I installed. Bonus, I get home and my OBD2 reader is dead and wont kick on. Up side? I get to buy a new OBD2 reader lol.

Gotta love old cars

just my

I bought this device relatively inexpensive and it's worked great for monitoring CEL's and various real-time sensors/parameters while running. they make a smaller less expensive version (that I don't have) but if it's anything like this I would highly recommend.

i use it with the car scanner app which has a free and paid for versions that work the same if you're looking for the type of data mentioned above.

The previous owner of mine did the purge valve right before I bought it. A few months ago I was getting another random evap code and a new OEM gas cap fixed that. Hopefully yours is as simple. Post the code when you get it pulled

I'm thinking/hoping for the same honestly. Ya, I'll post it if Amazon every ships the code reader

Well.... No Tein coilovers yet. They got delayed in shipping should be here Monday. I've also scheduled a paintless dent removal guy to come this week and take out some of the dings from the previous owner. Some nice folds on the passenger side from doors opening into it and a couple of small dents from who knows.

Here's the code that I pulled... A P1457. I'm think it very well might be the gas cap.

I decide to take the gas cap apart and see what makes it tick. I found a lot of dirt and debris in the cap so I cleaned it out and lubricated the gasket. Then I took a look at the filler neck and noticed that the filler had a bunch of debris and build up on it so I wet sanded the filler neck with some 2000 grit sand paper. Put everything back together and took it for a drive. Didn't come on in the drive but I'm thinking a long term test will be the decider there. The other thing I noticed was that the gasket had a bit of a nick taken out of it. Likely will need a replacement anyways.

The Flex Z's came in today so I figured I'd install them Took about 3.5 hrs to install everything (including rear sway bar joints and bushings and adjustable rear control arms).
Pretty nice to have near stock height with space age adjustment. Can't wait to take it out on the first drive.

Ah.. I don't see that really happening. You can see in the first rear end picture that the presetting from Tein slams the car down. The way I have it setup right now it's about 0.8 - 1 inch lower than stock. I'm going to feel this out for some time and adjust damper.
I scheduled a meeting next Tuesday for the dealership to perform an alignment on the car. After that. I'll report back in with the drive.

So far.... Everything except for some rear links have been replaced at this point so the car should be on rails. Fingers crossed!

Looking good! can't wait to see some wide shots. Are you lowering your car more in the rear than in the front?

you know that's a good question. I was thinking that the rear was too low compared to the front. Thoughts?

I'll take some pictures outside after the PDR on Thursday

it's very hard to tell with the pictures you took.
get it outside on level surface...
plus, sometimes front/vs rear spring rates settle faster.
Luckily, you can just adjust the collar...

I suggest using a nylon brush on the threads to clean debris off
before ever making adjustments though.

Also, I have super street coils which don't have separate spring preload...
that's an added variable to your height...

This is where she's at right now. I feel the rear needs to come up some.

Took it out for a drive today. Really impressed with the handling and the front settled a little so it's in line at 14.5 inches from fender to center cap with the rear. I think i'll go with this for some time until i feel it needs to be adjusted.

EVAP code came back! Ah! I'm going to have to smoke test it to figure out what's going on. Unfortunately, the OBDII system doesn't show EVAP pressures since it's too old to contain that detail. Which means there's going to be some fun diagnosing where the fault is coming from.

PDR came today and took out 13 dents between the two doors and the rear quarters. Dang! But!, it's looking super nice.

Awesome progress so far! I had a 2001 CL-S in high school that I LOVED; I regret selling it. One day I plan on doing the same as you, finding another one and saving it.

Well done

Loving this thread! Great work so far, happy to see another CL getting saved. I noticed your posts on reddit and your YouTube vids. You really are excited about this car, so let me see If I can help. After working at an Acura dealer in CT for more than 9 years I can tell you everytime one of these or a TL came in with an evap problem we always replaced both the purge valve solenoid, and the canister vent shut valve. Also known as the CVS valve. We didnt normally need to change the canister but that's always a possibility. Never did gas caps either they seem pretty stout. But hey if you've got a smoke machine definitely give that a try.
Add me to the quarantine meet lol! Still got my 6 speed she's getting some love as we speak. Keep the updates coming!

You're in the meet

Since you worked at the dealer. Here's what I've replaced so far: 17012-S84-A01 (dealership in preinspection said this is what it needed) & 36160-P8E-A51
The light comes on 10 minutes into the drive i'll clear it and it wont come on for the next 2-3 drives. You're recommending 17310-S84-L31?

Thanks!

Yes that is the part I'm recommending. After too many comebacks we would always replace both parts. Check all lines and hoses in the area as well of course. Good luck!

I have had this trouble with the S2000 and I just bought an entirely new used set of everything off ebay for cheap to
swap one thing at a time until it went away
Just missing the one at the front by the engine bay if the codes come back. No more gas smell after a new used
canister for me though.

@CLtotheTL32 you motherfucker...now I see why you were looking. DO IT!

Ordered the parts (OEM) to swap it out plus I ordered the gas cap gasket since it was 8$... Figured what could it harm. I'll post as usual when it comes - Thanks for the tip. Sounds like you're spot on from what googling showed too and it's the last logical part to replace (beyond hoses)

Those Coils are looking good! Does it ride any different once they settled and broke in? I just checked my parts receipts that I got with mine from the previous owner and 17310-S84-L31 was one of the parts he swapped out for the EVAP code when he was chasing it down. I think once you swap that out plus the gas cap gasket you should have it solved.

Greg D, I've taken it out a couple of times since installing; mostly on short drives, and yes, it does ride differently. One major difference is in the turns, the car doesn't seem to sway as much and it doesn't feel as vague in the corners. Keep in mind that I also replaced the rear sway bar links and bushings at the same time so that probably has a lot to do with the sway part i'm speaking of. The Z's have the adjustable damper so right now they are set at the recommended damper setting by Tein, but I might adjust the fronts to make them a little more firm. Overall, i think it was worth the price (especially since they were 20% off).

I'm hoping the dang EVAP code goes away with that part. It's really annoying to have a mostly sorted car that's really starting to look and drive well and then randomly getting a check engine light that has to be cleared every 2-3 drives.

Today was alignment day for the CL. After months of replacing suspension components it was finally time to get the car to the dealership for an alignment. Keep in mind that the closest Acura dealer is 30min away in the opposite direction from my work so the Honda dealership was close enough.

I eyeballed the rear and wasn't too far off

Also, figured I'd do a little video on what it's like to drive rough Vermont roads with the new Tein Coilovers. I'm waiting for some warm summer days ahead to take it on historic Route 100 - one of the top routes to drive in the northeast which happens to be the first road in the I turn onto in the video.

Wow for an eyeball alignment before that was pretty good! Awesome video. I think I'm most impressed how well it took those real rough patches. It seemed like it had the perfect amount of firmness and rebound where it wasn't overly jarring. I may have to consider putting a set on mine

I'm impressed too. There are sections of roads around where I live that are pure crap and the car soaks them up perfectly now. The ride quality has improved sooooo much it's a dream ride now. I've lowered cars in the past and have used "performance" suspensions before and never had them ride this well. Of course those were lower end models and 10+ years ago, but my statement still stands. I'd recommend looking at good quality struts and shocks if you're thinking of a mild upgrade. My plan b was going to be the Bilstein b6 if I was keeping it OEM height

I wish that were the truth, i'm sending it back in on Monday. It's not perfect
The steering wheel alignment is a few degrees to the right for straight which is annoying.

Did I understand you correctly that the front bumper needs to come off in order to replace the headlights?

You brought up in the video how you got to experience the car getting better each time you finished a phase. Obviously the subframe was dire and that must have been one of those night and day feelings but how bad was the rest of the suspension parts your replaced? I’m guessing since your car has fairly low miles you wanted to just freshen the whole thing all at once?
