S-type powertrain lineage
S-type powertrain lineage
Where else are the 260hp S-type motors and 5spd trannys (other than the Odyssey minivan) used in the Honda product line? I got excited when I figured out the NSX is also a 3.2L motor, but the Acura service advisor informed me the two motors are significantly, if not completely, different.
Also, if the CL-S debutted as an '01, when did the TL-S debut?

anyways, the NSX i know is DOHC while the CLS and TLS engines are SOHC. the 5 speed tranny is also used in the Honda Accord. and the TLS came about in the 2002 model year.
thats what i know for sure. anyone else care to chime in with a more confusing and technical response?

V6 Accord 3.0L
The CLS/TLS get the 3.2L block with same heads (260 hp).
THE CL/TL get the same block, but had other changes "up top".
THE MDX gets the 3.5L block (basically the same block but with different crank, rods, and pistons).
-- end --
THE NSX/RL are 90-degree V6 motors and are different...
THE NSX with its 90-degree configuration is quite different (DOHC, titanium rods, etc, etc)
I don’t remember the exact TLS date…

The TL-S is an early 2002 model..while the CL was a late 2001.
The NSX is from a different family of motors...K-series I think...which are DOHC, dual overhead cams, one for intake and one for exhaust per bank of cylinders. The RL has a derivative of this motor, but is detuned signficantly.
interesting discussion
ive always wondered how the degrees term is used for motors...anyone help me out? how is a 90 degree engine different from 60?
i think ive seen a bunch of sport cars with 90 degree engines...is that true for all good sports cars, or just a hasty generalization?
thx

like how the cylinders are angled in relation to eachother i guess.
o yeah, and while the NSX and RL are both C Block engines (apparently from what other posts say) the NSX is VTEC and the RL is NOT VTEC, hence the rediculous difference in power.

Typically 90 degrees is best for V-8's & 60 degrees for V-6 & V-12 motors. (or 180 degrees for a 6 or 12
)There where more than a few 90 degree V-6's around in the 80's especially from domestic manufactures that essentially lopped 2 cylinders off a V-8 design to get a V-6.
