S/C for Auto - Worth it, or not???

I've been waiting ever-so-patiently for the Comptech S/C for the auto CL-S. I just read the article in Car and Driver, and now I'm not so sure if it's worth the $4K and labor! Only .3 seconds faster in zero to sixty!!! I was hoping to be in the 5.5 sec range, as I already am in the low, low 6's. I've also read the other thread(s) - I know that stock cars have done 1/4 mile numbers close to the posted 14.2...

I'm REALLY on the fence about this right now - I have the money - I really want(ed) to get it but, (1) Comptech has reduced the previously stated HP increase - now in the 35hp - 40hp range, instead of 50hp - 55hp. I mean, it would still pull stronger and sound better when you're getting on it. (which is all the time!)
(2) after reading the C&D article yesterday, it left me sorta disappointed with the lackluster performance differences.

THE BOTTOM LINE: From those that have the S/C already, or have ridden in one - is it worth the money for the extra "thrill-factor" ???

Will it smoke the tires off a standing start with the auto???

Will it break'um lose when hitting second gear from a rolling start???

Is the torque steer much worse???

Will it give you enough extra feeling of exceleration to make it worth it???

Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

All i know is the C&D article is pretty misleading - their times are MUCH WORSE than you can expect with the S/C. But i can't answer any of your other questions.

i read that article to and thought that it was a bunch of crap......they run a 14.2 in the CL with supercharger, headers, Icebox, and numerous other mods? ive ran a 14.3 in my car with just headers and intake......they obviously need to stop using the old fashioned stop watch technique on their times....they are waaaaaaay off.....im still gettting the supercharger this summer....

Do it I'm enjoying every minute. So far no downside except gas mileage is down about 1-2 mpg. The extra power is linear, right away. The whine is cool, but not as loud as i expected, understated. Remember, even if it's 40 extra h.p., it's all through the rev range unlike headers which don't really kick in til after 5K or so. Also, Comptech IS working on a piggyback for the ECU which should give you an extra 15 or so. Now to answer your other questions:

It definitely puts out more wheel spin, but easily managed. You could smoke em if you wanted to.

Haven't really broken them loose yet.

No problems with torque steer, and we really worked the SC out on our last twisty run.

The added acceleration is very noticeable, especially over 70 or so. I nailed it this morning and was at 110 much quicker, it's scary fast.

Hope this helps, oh the Supercharged by Comptech stickers provided add another 10 h.p.

Mine arrived yesterday. If your going to modify your car, sooner or later you'll reach a point where you'll need to decide; bottle, boost, or internals. When the bottle empty, the fun is done. Internals are ok, so why mess with those now? The blower is a simble bolt on mod, you can do with simple hand tools, that delivers imeadiate and constant power, and torque, right to the top. Blower kits rarely stay in their stock form, as will be the case with these as time goes on. You can jump in now, and mod as you go, or wait and watch everyone else. Timing and money was right for me now, so I went for it. Plus my other blower car is done.

When I did that, my tranny said "Cool Man!" Maybe that's why the kit comes with the tranny cooler.

The headers would have been on two months ago but I decided to go with the Stone headers so here I wait. If I put the blower on now, I'll have to pull it off to put the headers on. With my schedule, it'll take me a few weeks to get everything ready to drop the blower on anyways, so maybe they'll be here by then.

I was referring to gas mileage... 1-2 drop.. Sorry...

I am amazed that it is only a 1-2 drop.. Thought you were smoking crack when you figured out your mileage since it is only a 1-2 MPG drop.

Thanks for clarifying Smitty. Yeah, my last 2 tanks were unbelievably close - 304 miles 16.3 gallons = 18.65 and 293 miles 15.7 gallons = 18.66 !! I've never gotten great mileage, since i put on headers and the AEM my daily average was about 19.5 - 20.0 so i'm only down a gallon or so. Now a few weeks ago we did the twisties hard, and i'd say i got about 15, so if you go all out it can be fairly worse.

Install is close to 10 hours. Another good reason to do it at the dealer is my warranty is fine.

I really want to, and I've been chomping at the bit for almost a year now! I'd like to see some more convincing numbers from some of our CL brothers. (HINT! HINT!) Also, I need to find out how much it will raise my insurance premium to get the $5K additional aftermarket coverage, and if it will cause it to go into a different class - since it's a "hi-performance" add-on, according to the insurance companies. And, if you get into a front end impact accident, that supercharger is going to end up in pieces (as well as other major engine parts)

Let me know YOUR impressions once you get it on!

I can't say anything about numbers because I run huge 19 chromies and have a over 300 pund system, but I must say that I am not surprised by C&D's numbers. I would expect to run a 14.2 at the track if it wasn't for my weight issue.

By the charger for exhilartion but not as the best bang for you buck mod. The power for cost ratio is quite disturbing. But I think with the ECU and pulley swap this should be putting down the claimed 60WHP.

Install is 10 hours and yes certain dealerships will install it and warrenty it as well, as RedRider commented on.

You want to go fast for timeslips? Build yourself a turbo or buy a bottle. But if you just enjoy modding your car and have run out of things to do and have money to burn, then I highly reccomend it.
