Rust on Rotor, dealership said need to replace!
Rust on Rotor, dealership said need to replace!
I recently had servicing done on the car (type 3 or 4, if forget). When the dealership was looking at my brakes (all four of them!) they noticed there was a lot of rust build up towards the outer edge of the rotor. The rotor is noticeably thicker there, compared to the inner portion of the rotor. The rusted area juts out a bit and if you run your finger along the surface of the rotor you can feel the ridge that's been left behind. It's like the pad isn't making contact with the outer part of the rotor or there is uneven contact. Is this something to worry about, ie is it affecting my braking or is it okay to wait until my brakes are worn...I've put about 40,000KM on them. I've searched the forum and the rust has been mentioned but I didn't see much in terms of if it is a problem that needs to be addressed or something that's more cosmetic. The dealership recommended replacing them. If I need to replace thinking of going slotted rotora's and ebc greenstuff. I have 16inch snows, so BBK is out of the question!
Brembo blanks are cheap. Probably wont be much more if you can do it yourself as opposed to driving to the shop and having them do everything including resurfacing.
I don't think a noticeable ridge is necessarily bad assuming everyhting else is fine. The pad won't make contact with the rotor to the very edge.. Here's what mine looked like when I replaced em with brembo oe blanks. (Due to warpage)

Mine have that outer lip of rust on them too! The rest of the surface is a bit grooved on my rotors. Are they supposed to be perfectly smooth? My front rotors have been machined twice already due to warping. The first time they machined them, they didn't replace the pads, so they had to be machined again and new pads were put on. The wouldn't have replaced pads if I had got the TSB message on acura-cl.com!
Over past 40 years I've owned many cars with disk brakes and eventually all of them ended up with the rusty outer edge on the rotors you talk about. The pads do not touch this area so it gets rusty but since the pads do not touch this area it has absolutely no effect on braking. The only problem it ever gave me was making it hard to slide the caliper off the rotor when doing a brake job. If you really hate the way it looks get it taken care of, but it really is only a cosmetic problem.

Your dealer would LOVE to sell you a new set of rotors - that you don't need.
The outer edge is rusty because this is NOT SWEPT BY THE PADS. The pad material doesn't go all the way to the edge of the rotors.
gurot1 -- Some minor grooving in the swept area of the rotor is normal and nothing to be concerned about. You can have the rotors turned the next time you put pads on, but as long as it's only minor, turning is not necessary either. The new pads will quickly wear to the rotor surface. It's another place shops reach into your pocket and take your money out.

I guess this does give me a reason (excuse) to upgrade my brakes! I haven't been too impressed by the cars braking. You think a heavy car like ours would have better brakes on it. A buddy who's a mechanic said he would put new pads and rotors for real cheap...a few corona's on a nice weekend!

Hope he has fun on the rotor screws!
Thats normal, as the pads DO NOT go over that area. I would suggest just taking the wheels off and sanding or wire wheeling the rust off, tape off the area that the pad does contact, and then paint that area with a high temp black paint. I plan on doing it soon and will post pics.
I had fun with the rotor screws, but I figured it out from this forum:
After the wheel is off, put lugs back on on either side of the screw, and tighten the crap out of it. This helps take pressure off of the screw head, then I was able to simply loosen it with my #3 Philips w/ a Crescent wrench on the handle.

I just visited the dealership this past weekend about my brakes as well adn they told me the same thing.
THe pad doesn't make contact with the entire rotor surface. so what happens is the outer edge of the rotor doesn't get worn like the inner portions of the rotor. So the outer portion over time tends to show a lip. when they get resurfaced is when the lip goes away slightly.
Sounds like your dealership was tryin to make $$ off ya.

It took 150K mi of driving and 3 brake services before mine finally needed replacing. I'm just wearing the pads and rotors out as much as I can before I change the rotors. Still have 80% life on the pads so gotta wait.
Depends on the color of rust. If it looks like regular dark rust, thats normal. If its a really bright orange than your rotors need to be replaced, but that only happens when the rotors get too hot and its usually from stuck calipers.
