running catless

first off to let you guys know im looking for FREE EASY power. so i decided to run catless and install alphawerks headers to free up some much needed horsepower, to prepare for the soon to be announced FORCED INDUCTION.

ok, after a ton of searching i found what i was looking for. so i ordered a o2 sim from casper elect, a buddy fabbed up a bypass pipe to put in the place of the cat with a bung welded for a wide band o2 sensor for later tuning.
first off i noticed the possible problem with droning headers. the welds are thick and bulky creating turbulent exhaust gasses to pass over them creating noise. i will be wrapping the headers to save all the excess heat i can in order to keep it out of the engine bay which will also cut noise. i will finish this setup over the weekend and let you all know how it goes.

any thoughts ?

It's going to sound very loud. You will be deaf after about.... 5 minutes.

Just run an e-cutout... that way you can actually choose.

I'm not running a cat on my car, it did make my exhaust tone a little deeper but other than that, I didn't notice a sound difference. I have apexi ws exhaust by the way.

don't you have a turbo to help make it a little more quiet.

Yeah I have a turbo but why would that make it quieter? The exhaust is going to flow through there turbo or not.

For some reason turbo cars are quieter than NA cars without a cat...

And I ran without a cat on my '94 Accord 4 cyl and it was obnoxiously loud after I removed it.

the turbo is another thing that gets in the way of sound waves.

Are you for real??? Do you know what drives your turbo??? Exhaust gases...that is why turbo cars can run 2.5"+ pipes without people going deaf.

ok update!!

last min i decided to run a cat, not because of what everyone said about noise, but because i wanted to be "legal" running on the street. so i took the oem cat assy and the other hi flow i had here at home. first off the hi flow you can see through clearly almost, the factory one you can see a small spec of light through it, there is a very clear difference between the two which is cool. i hope to bump up HP by doing this minor mod while im putting in my headers. here is a pic of how it looks side by side. i will give my impressions later on. also the weight is very different between the two, i will guess at a 4-5 lbs loss of weight not including heat shields.

yes i agree that there is NO need to loose torque, and i am guessing at a max 5hp increase in power, and i know that number increase is pushing my luck.
overall the car should run much better, especially when i install the supercharger or turbo. i am still waiting to meet up with allmotor to discuss what i could possibly run on the car. but no matter what im not going to run a catback exhaust to keep the stealth look.

ok im done with the install. and i must say this thing hauls ass now, much better than i thought it was going to be. i do feel like my take off isnt quite punchy as before but it is still impressive from 2300 rpm's and above. when vtec kicks in its not as noticeable as before but the mid range punch is very fun.

note: installed was ice box/alpha werks headers/hi flow cat/o2 simulator.

good job, man. so how much louder would you have to say it has gotten? obviously we're also taking into account the increased flow due to the I/H/CC.

honestly the noise increased about 10-15% no resonating headers like the guy that i bought them from said they were doing. overall im very pleased by the outcome and would recommend this mod combo to anyone. i think the headers resonate when installed in a rush, i paced this install out over 3 days and took my sweet time to make sure i wouldnt have to do it 2 times.
